PART 2 — THE STOPWATCH THAT REVEALED EVERYTHING

The room stayed silent.
Not the peaceful kind.
The kind of silence that comes right before something breaks.
My mother stared at me like she couldn't believe I had finally challenged her.
For years, Victoria Langston had controlled every room she entered.
Family dinners.
Business meetings.
Even my childhood.
Everyone adjusted themselves around her.
Everyone except me.
Until today.
“Ethan,” she said slowly, putting her teacup down.
“You are overreacting.”
I looked at her.
“Overreacting?”
“Yes.”
She pointed toward Lily.
“She’s emotional because she’s pregnant.”
My jaw tightened.
“She’s terrified because you tortured her.”
My mother’s expression hardened.
“Tortured?”
She laughed softly.
“What a dramatic word.”
I walked to the dining table.
The stopwatch was still there.
A small object.
But somehow it felt heavier than anything else in the room.
I picked it up.
The timer was still running.
4 hours, 12 minutes, 38 seconds.
My fingers tightened around it.
“You timed her.”
My mother shrugged.
“Of course.”
“Why?”
“Because she needed to learn.”
I stared.
“Learn what?”
She leaned back.
“How to be a wife.”
The words made my stomach turn.
I looked at Lily.
My wife.
The woman carrying our child.
The woman who always defended my family.
The woman who never complained.
And I realized something.
She had been suffering quietly because she was trying to protect me.
Protect my relationship with my mother.
And my mother used that kindness against her.
“Karen,” I said.
The maternity assistant looked nervous.
“Yes, Mr. Carter?”
“How long has this been happening?”
She looked at my mother.
That was the answer.
“Answer me.”
Karen swallowed.
“Three weeks.”
Lily looked down.
Three weeks.
My heart sank.
“What?”
My mother interrupted.
“She was preparing her.”
“For what?”
“To become a mother.”
I laughed once.
No humor.
Just disbelief.
“You made a nine-month pregnant woman stand for hours for three weeks?”
“She needed strength.”
“No.”
I stepped closer.
“She needed support.”
Karen suddenly spoke.
“I’m sorry.”
Everyone turned.
My mother looked shocked.
“You’re sorry?”
Karen’s face went pale.
“I didn’t think it would go this far.”
My mother’s eyes narrowed.
“Careful.”
That single word.
That warning.
Showed me everything.
Karen wasn’t helping her.
She was afraid of her.
I turned my phone around.
“I recorded everything.”
My mother froze.
“What?”
“Your confession.”
Her face changed.
For the first time…
she realized she wasn’t in control.
“You wouldn’t.”
I looked at her.
“You don’t know me anymore.”
She stood.
“You’re my son.”
“And Lily is my wife.”
Silence.
“And my child is inside her.”
My voice lowered.
“You don’t get to hurt them.”
Then security arrived.
Two officers stepped inside.
My mother stared at them.
“This is ridiculous.”
One of them looked at Lily.
Then the stopwatch.
Then me.
“What happened here?”
I answered.
“My pregnant wife was forced to stand for over four hours as punishment.”
The officer’s expression changed.
“Ma’am, is that true?”
My mother opened her mouth.
No words came out.
May you like
Because for once…
she had no explanation.
