Chapter 3 - The Mask Cracks

A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the hospital corridor.
Dr. Reed looked at Patricia, then looked at me, his eyes narrowing into cold slits as he assessed the situation.
Patricia smiled smoothly, reaching into her handbag to pull out a small leather wallet. "I have my ID, Doctor. And my husband, Robert, is the owner of Carter Hardware downtown. We are a very respected family in this county. We are more than prepared to take full responsibility for little Nora while Chloe receives the psychiatric treatment she clearly desperately needs."
My father stepped forward, nodding solemnly, playing his role perfectly. "It's true, Doctor. Chloe hasn't been right in the head since her fiancé, Daniel, went out of town for business last week. She’s been hallucinating, accusing us of ridiculous things—"
"You lying, psychotic monsters," I whispered.
Patricia turned to look at me, her eyes flashing with a brief, terrifying warning before her face softened back into fake pity. "See, Doctor? She’s delusional. She’s verbalizing aggression."
"I am not delusional," I said, my voice rising, growing stronger, clearer, and louder with every word as I took three steps toward my mother. "My daughter’s blood test came back five minutes ago, Patricia."
Patricia’s jaw twitched almost imperceptibly. "What are you talking about?"
"She was poisoned," I said, stepping right into her space, ignoring the pain in my bandaged feet. "She was given a lethal dose of Chloral Hydrate and Diphenhydramine. The doctor just told me. The police are already on their way."
My sister Kim let out a quiet gasp, her hand flying to her mouth, her eyes darting nervously toward our mother.
Patricia’s fake tearful expression vanished in an instant. Her face hardened into a mask of pure, icy arrogance.
"Don't be ridiculous," Patricia scoffed, adjusting her fur coat. "You probably gave her something yourself to gain attention from Daniel. Everyone knows you've been desperate to keep him from realizing what a failure you are."
"Who has the prescription for Chloral Hydrate in our house, Mom?" I asked, my eyes burning into hers. "You do. For your chronic insomnia. You keep the bottle in your locked vanity drawer."
Patricia stepped closer, leaning her face inches from mine, her voice dropping into a low, venomous hiss that only I could hear. "Listen to me, you ungrateful little bitch. No one is going to believe a word that comes out of your mouth. You are nothing in this town. I built this family’s reputation, and I will not let a worthless, pathetic mistake like you ruin Belle’s pageant career or my standing in the church. If you know what's good for you, you will pack your bags and leave St. Louis today, or I will make sure you spend the rest of your life in a state hospital."
"She doesn't have to leave anywhere, Mrs. Carter."
A deep, commanding voice boomed from the end of the hallway.
Two uniformed police officers and a man in a sharp grey suit stepped out of the elevator.
The man in the suit was Detective Thomas Vance—a veteran lead investigator with the St. Louis Special Victims Unit. Beside him walked Daniel, my fiancé, his face pale with horror, his coat unbuttoned, having just sprinted straight from the airport after receiving my frantic text message earlier.
"Chloe!" Daniel cried out, rushing past the officers to throw his arms around me, holding me tightly against his chest. "Oh God, Chloe! I got your text... is Nora okay?!"
"She's alive, Daniel... she's in the ICU," I sobbed into his shoulder, feeling the solid, safe warmth of his arms for the first time in twelve hours. "They tried to kill her... they threw her in the dumpster..."
Daniel pulled back, his eyes burning with a terrifying, protective rage as he swung around to face my parents. "You sick bastards," he rasped, his voice shaking.
Detective Vance stepped between Daniel and my parents, holding up his badge.
"Patricia Carter? Robert Carter?" Vance asked coldly.
"Detective," Patricia said quickly, attempting to regain her charming composure. "Thank goodness you're here. My daughter is having a severe mental breakdown—"
"Mrs. Carter, save your breath," Detective Vance interrupted flatly, pulling a small plastic evidence bag from his coat pocket.
Inside the bag was a small glass measuring cup stained with pink residue, along with a pair of heavy rubber work gloves.
Patricia’s eyes went wide with sudden, absolute panic.
"Our forensic team just finished executing a search warrant on the premises of Carter Hardware," Vance said, his voice echoing loudly in the corridor. "We found this measuring cup in your private kitchen sink, containing traces of Chloral Hydrate and syrup. We also reviewed the security footage from the alleyway behind your building."
Kim let out a loud, terrified squeal. "Mom! You said the cameras were turned off!"
"Shut up, Kim!" Patricia shrieked, spinning around to glare at her daughter.
"The high-definition night-vision camera installed by the alley business association was fully operational, Mrs. Carter," Detective Vance continued coldly, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. "It captured clear, uninterrupted footage of you at 6:15 AM today, carrying a dark trash bag out to the dumpster, unlocking the latch, throwing the bag inside, and locking it shut."
Patricia stumbled backward, her face turning as white as the hospital walls.
"No... no, that's not... I was just throwing out old blankets!" she stammered, her voice cracking into a desperate, pathetic screech. "Robert! Tell them! Tell them it was an accident!"
Robert backed away from his wife, his hands raised in panic. "I didn't have anything to do with it! She told me the kid was just sleeping! I didn't see her put her in the dumpster!"
"You coward!" Patricia screamed, throwing her handbag directly at her husband's face. "You useless, pathetic coward!"
"Patricia Carter, you are under arrest for Attempted First-Degree Murder, Aggravated Child Abuse, and Tampering with Evidence," Detective Vance announced firmly, grabbing her arm and twisting it behind her back, snapping the cold steel handcuffs around her wrists.
"Get your hands off me!" Patricia shrieked, thrashing furiously against the officer's grip as church members and hospital staff gathered at the end of the hall, staring at her in absolute shock and horror. "Do you know who I am?! I am Patricia Carter! I run the Whitmore Charity Committee! You can't do this to me!"
"Read her her rights," Vance ordered his partner.

As the officers dragged my mother down the hallway, kicking and screaming like a madwoman, Robert and Kim were escorted behind her in handcuffs as co-conspirators.
I stood beside Daniel, holding his hand, watching the monsters who had tortured me my entire life finally get dragged into the dark.
