Chapter 6 - The Counter-Offensive

Downstairs, the atmosphere was thick with palpable panic.

When Maya and I descended the staircase hand-in-hand, my mother and Julian were huddled near the front door like two conspirators caught red-handed. Julian had his car keys in his hand, looking ready to bolt, while Victoria was dabbing nervously at her eyes with a designer handkerchief.

“Daniel, let’s be reasonable about this,” my mother began instantly, putting on her best wounded-matriarch performance. “Family is family. We can sort this out with lawyers privately without dragging the police into—em—family matters.”

“Family doesn't forge signatures, Mom,” I said, walking straight past them to the kitchen island where my tactical backpack still sat.

I unzipped the main compartment and pulled out my encrypted military-grade laptop. I flipped it open, plugged a hardware security key into the USB port, and connected to the home’s secure router network.

“What are you doing?” Julian demanded, his voice pitching an octave higher as he stepped closer. “You can’t just lock us out of—!”

“I already have,” I replied calmly without looking up from the screen.

With a few rapid keystrokes, I accessed our corporate banking gateway. As the managing partner and primary security administrator of Carter Lane Logistics, I possessed master override privileges that even high-priced corporate lawyers couldn't easily bypass.

Click.

“Access revoked,” I murmured aloud.

Across the room, Julian’s personal smartphone buzzed violently in his pocket. He yanked it out, his eyes darting across the screen.

“What... what is this?” Julian shouted, his face turning beet red. “My corporate card just got declined! The VJ Holdings account has been frozen!”

“Frozen pending a criminal audit for identity theft, wire fraud, and extortion,” I said, finally looking up from the screen and locking eyes with my brother. “Every cent you funneled out of our accounts over the last six months has been flagged. The bank’s fraud department is already reviewing the transfer logs. By noon, federal investigators will have copies of every forged document you had Maya sign.”

Victoria gasped, clutching her pearls. “Daniel, you wouldn't send your own brother to prison over a paper dispute! He’s blood!”

“Blood didn't stop him from terrorizing my pregnant wife while I was defending my post overseas,” I snapped, standing up slowly from the stool. The cold, towering authority in my stance made both of them physically recoil. “You both have ten minutes to pack your bags, load your things into your car, and get off my property.”

“You can’t kick us out!” Julian screamed, dropping the corporate facade entirely, revealing the desperate, whining coward underneath. “The house is legally under VJ Holdings! We own seventy percent of the estate!”

“A fraudulent transfer executed via coercion and forgery has zero legal standing, Julian,” a cool, calm voice spoke from the hallway behind me.

We all turned.

Maya stood near the foot of the stairs, her chin held high, her eyes dry and sharp as flint. She had changed into a tailored blazer and dark trousers, looking every bit the fierce corporate executive who had built Carter Lane from the ground up.

“And even if it did,” Maya continued, stepping into the living room beside me, “as of five minutes ago, our corporate legal counsel filed an emergency injunction in Fairfax County Circuit Court freezing all assets associated with VJ Holdings pending a criminal investigation into identity theft.”

Julian stared at her in utter disbelief, realizing the trap had snapped shut around him with military precision.

“You have ten minutes,” I repeated, pointing toward the front door. “After that, I don't call the police. I call the military police detail stationed out of Fort Belvoir, and let them handle trespassers on federal contractor property.”
