Chapter 8 - The Rhythm of the Living

The autumn evening air was crisp and smelled of woodsmoke and fallen leaves as Daniel, Elena, and Mateo stepped out of the courthouse doors and descended the grand stone steps.

A flock of starlings wheeled across the lavender-tinted sky, cutting sharp, looping patterns against the dying light of day.

Mateo skipped down ahead of them, his small sneakers tapping a light, erratic rhythm against the concrete, before stopping at the bottom of the steps to wait for his parents. He held out his right hand, palm upward, looking back over his shoulder with a mischievous grin.

Daniel smiled, stepping back to let Elena take the lead.

Elena walked down the steps, knelt in front of her son on the sidewalk, and raised her hand.

Slowly, deliberately, she pressed her fingers against his palm.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

Mateo closed his fist around her fingers, laughing as he pulled her up into a fierce, tight hug.

Daniel walked down to join them, wrapping his arms around both of his world, pulling them close against the gathering chill of the evening. The ghosts of the hill had been laid to rest; the sealed box was nothing more than an ugly memory buried under the weight of truth and survival.

They turned down the sidewalk toward home, walking side by side as the streetlights flickered on one by one, casting a warm, steady glow over the path ahead.
