Chapter 7 - The Lockdown

Caleb pushed past Sarah, stepping into the small examination room. His face was twisted into a scowl of pure, unadulterated menace.
"We're taking the kid," Caleb said, his voice a low, raspy growl. He reached out with a long, calloused hand to grab Lily’s arm. "She's ours. You don't know what the hell you're talking about, lady."
"Touch her and I will kill you," I spat, stepping straight into his chest, blocking his reach with my own body.
Nurse Martha didn't flinch. She slammed her hand against the red emergency panic button on the wall beside the sink. A high-pitched, pulse-like alarm instantly began to echo through the ceiling speakers.
"Code Purple! Pediatrics! Room 4!" the automated intercom blared.
"Caleb, let's go! They called the cops!" Sarah shrieked, tugging frantically at Caleb's jacket. "We have to leave!"
"Shut up!" Caleb snarled, shoving Sarah backward so hard her back slammed against the doorframe. He turned back to me, his hand reaching inside his heavy canvas jacket—a movement so terrifyingly deliberate that my heart stopped.
Before he could pull his hand out, the two hospital security officers tackled him from behind.
The heavy impact sent all three men crashing onto the linoleum floor, knocking over a stainless-steel tray of medical supplies. Bandages, gauze rolls, and antiseptic bottles scattered across the room with a chaotic clatter. Caleb fought like a wild animal, cursing and kicking, his baseball cap flying off to reveal a face red with fury.
"Get him down! Hold his arms!" one officer yelled, driving his knee into Caleb's shoulder blade while the second officer yanked Caleb's hands behind his back, snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.
From inside Caleb's open jacket pocket, a long, heavy utility knife—its silver blade still stained with dried, dark residue—clattered onto the floor, rolling right to the edge of my shoe.
Sarah sank onto the floor beside the overturned supply tray, burying her face in her bruised hands, sobbing hysterically. "I didn't want him to hurt her... he said it was the only way... he said he'd kill us both if we didn't take it out..."
Two female police officers, who had been on routine duty in the emergency room lobby, rushed into the room with their tasers drawn, taking control of the scene within seconds.
I dropped to my knees, wrapping both arms around Lily and Emma, pulling both girls tight against my chest. Emma was crying softly, her face buried in my shoulder, while Lily remained completely still, her tiny hands clutching the fabric of my shirt like a lifeline.
A pediatric surgeon, accompanied by a social worker holding a clipboard, pushed through the crowded doorway.
"Is the child stable?" the surgeon asked sharply, looking at Nurse Martha.
"Incision is infected, black sutures inserted improperly in an unsterile environment," Martha reported quickly, her voice steady despite the chaos around us. "She needs immediate surgical cleaning, removal of the remaining stitches, a drain placement, and IV antibiotics."
The social worker stepped forward, kneeling beside me and looking gently at Lily. "Mrs. Miller? I am Susan from Child Protective Services. We are taking emergency protective custody of Lily immediately. She is safe now. Nobody is going to hurt her ever again."
I looked down at my niece. For the first time since she had stepped out of that gray sedan on Friday night, the terrifying tension in her small frame broke. A single, heavy tear escaped her eye, tracing a clean path through the dust on her cheek.
"Auntie Rachel?" she whispered.
"I'm right here, sweetie," I sobbed, kissing the top of her head. "I'm not going anywhere."

"Can I stay with you now?"
"Yes," I promised, looking over at Sarah, who was currently being hoisted to her feet by a female officer, her wrist being placed in handcuffs. "You're staying with me forever."
