Chapter 4 - The Tearing of the Mask

The silence in the room blew apart into total, chaotic pandemonium.

"Amanda!" Chloe shrieked, turning on her cousin like a rabid dog. "You?! You took my ring?!"

Amanda burst into hysterical sobs, falling to her knees on the marble floor, her hands covering her face. "I'm sorry! I'm so sorry, Chloe! I'm in debt! My husband lost his job, and the bank is taking our house! You were bragging about the ring all week, and... and it just fell into your dress! I panicked! I'm sorry!"

"You ruined my wedding!" Chloe screamed, lunging toward her cousin, only to be caught and held back by her husband and two groomsmen. "You pathetic, jealous thief!"

The two hundred guests—the elite, wealthy network Eleanor and Chloe had spent years cultivating—were now staring at the head table with looks of absolute disgust and mockery. Phones were pulled out of pockets. The quiet click of camera shutters began echoing through the room as guests recorded the melt-down.

Eleanor stood frozen in the center of the floor, her face twitching violently.

She looked at Amanda weeping on the floor. She looked at the diamond ring sitting by my shoe. Then she looked at me—standing tall despite my torn dress, surrounded by four suited executive security guards.

Eleanor swallowed hard, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. She tried to force a warm, motherly smile onto her face, stepping toward me with her hands outstretched.

"Vivienne... darling..." Eleanor purred, her voice dripping with sudden, sickening sweetness. "Oh, my sweet girl... what an absolute, terrible misunderstanding! You know how protective Chloe is of her things... she was just so stressed today! You understand, don't you? We're family! We're all on the same team!"

She reached out to touch my arm—the same arm her daughter had bruised minutes ago.

"Do not touch her," Marcus’s voice cut through the air like a razor blade. He stepped firmly between Eleanor and me, his large frame blocking her entirely.

I looked over Marcus’s shoulder at Eleanor.

"Misunderstanding?" I said, my voice smooth, quiet, and completely devoid of warmth. "Five minutes ago, you tore my dress off my body in front of two hundred people. You called me a rat. You told everyone I was a thief who belonged in a cell."

"I was emotional!" Eleanor pleaded, her hands trembling as she looked around at the judging eyes of her peers. "I was just defending my daughter! You know I've always cared about you, Vivienne! Dominic, tell her! Tell her how much we love her!"

Dominic stepped forward, his face pale, his eyes pleading. "Vivienne... please, honey. My mother made a mistake. Amanda is the one who did this! Let’s just put the ring back on Chloe, clear the room, and talk about this at home. We’re a family."

I looked at Dominic—the man who had stood silent while his sister dumped my purse, the man who had let his mother rip my clothes, the man who had asked me to "wait in the coatroom" to avoid embarrassing him.

"There is no home to go to, Dominic," I said softly.

I reached down to my hand, unslid my simple platinum wedding band from my finger, and held it out toward him.

"We are done."

Dominic stared at the ring in my palm as if it were a burning coal. "Vivienne... no... please, don't do this! You're eight months pregnant! We have a baby coming!"

"And my child will grow up knowing that their mother never allowed herself to be stepped on by cowards," I said.

I dropped the band onto the marble floor. It landed with a tiny, sharp sound, rolling until it hit the toe of his shoe.

At that exact moment, the heavy double doors of the ballroom swung open once again.

Standing in the entryway was my father, Arthur Sterling.

He wore a dark charcoal wool coat over a simple suit, his posture regal, his silver hair neatly styled. Behind him stood two senior city police detectives and the managing director of the St. Regis hotel chain.

My father didn't look at the crowd. He didn't look at the glittering chandeliers or the towering cake. His eyes scanned the room until they found me.

When he saw the torn chiffon hanging from my shoulder, the quiet, icy composure in his eyes transformed into something terrifying.

He walked down the center aisle of the ballroom, every person instinctively stepping back to give him a wide berth. He reached my side, pulled off his heavy wool coat, and gently wrapped it around my shoulders, covering my torn dress and my pregnant belly.

"Are you alright, sweetheart?" my father asked softly, kissing the side of my forehead.

"I'm fine, Dad," I whispered. "I'm ready to go home."

My father turned around to face Eleanor, Chloe, and Dominic. The air in the room temperature seemed to drop twenty degrees.

"Mr. Sterling..." Eleanor stammered, her voice cracking entirely. "Please... we didn't know—"

"My name is Arthur Sterling," my father said, his voice quiet, low, and echoing with absolute power. "And by tomorrow morning, every single one of you will know exactly who I am."
