Chapter 4 - The Fall of the House of Vance

The legal and financial destruction of the Vance Group was a masterclass in controlled demolition.
Within forty-eight hours of the boardroom meeting, the federal authorities froze the assets of both the corporation and the personal bank accounts of Thomas and Mark Vance, pending the outcome of the bribery and tax evasion investigation. The Vance Grand Tower project was officially halted, the site surrounded by yellow police tape and federal inspectors taking core samples of the cheap steel foundation.
My mother, Patricia, called me thirty times in a single day. When I finally answered, her voice was hysterical, stripped of the polite, high-society composure she had maintained her entire life.
"Clara! How could you do this to your own family?!" she wept. "Your father is facing federal prison! They are going to seize the Cherry Hills estate! We won't have anything left! What about our reputation? What about our standing in the community?"
"Where was your concern for our family when Vanessa pushed Emily into that pool, Mom?" I asked, my voice as cold as ice. "Where were you when Dad held me back while my daughter was drowning? You stood there and watched. You chose his money and his status over your own granddaughter’s life."
"It was just a misunderstanding!" she cried. "Vanessa didn't mean any harm! It was a joke!"
"It wasn't a joke," I said. "And neither is this."
I hung up the phone and blocked her number.
The next person to arrive at my apartment was Vanessa. She didn't knock; she banged on the door until the building security guard came up. I went out to the hallway to meet her, not wanting her near my daughter.
Vanessa’s designer clothes were rumpled, her eyes wild with a mixture of anger and genuine terror. The social circle she had spent her life cultivating—the wealthy elites who tolerated her cruelty because of her father's money—had vanished overnight. She was no longer the untouchable heiress of Denver.
"You think you're so smart, Clara," Vanessa hissed, stepping close to me, her breath smelling of stale wine. "You ruined everything. My trust fund is frozen. I can't pay my rent. My friends won't even return my texts! All because of that little brat of yours!"
"Don't you dare speak her name," I said, my voice dropping to a whisper that made Vanessa step back in surprise. "You pushed my seven-year-old daughter into a twelve-foot pool knowing she couldn't swim. You did it to hurt me, because you've always hated that I was the only one who didn't fear you."
"She survived, didn't she?!" Vanessa yelled. "It was just a pool! She was fine!"
"She survived because I fought through my father’s grip and jumped in to save her," I said. "No thanks to any of you. You wanted to play games, Vanessa. But you forgot that I built the board we're playing on. I knew every transaction, every illegal dollar, and every structural corner you and Dad cut. I held the keys to your kingdom, and you thought I was just the quiet girl who washed the dishes."

"Dad will destroy you," she threatened, though her voice lacked conviction.
"Dad is currently in a federal holding facility waiting for his bail hearing," I countered, looking down at her. "He can't save himself, let alone you. Go home, Vanessa. Or what's left of it."
