Chapter 4 - The Collapse of the Citadel

By ten o'clock the following morning, the elegant marble corridors of the County Superior Courthouse were bustling with attorneys, reporters, and court marshals.

Word had spread rapidly through the local legal and business communities. Mark Vance, the charming CEO of Vance Commercial Logistics who had recently been bidding on a ten-million-dollar municipal supply contract, was being brought up from the holding cells for a emergency bail and injunction hearing.

I sat at the prosecution table alongside the Assistant District Attorney, a sharp young prosecutor named Sarah Jenkins who had eagerly accepted my offer to sit second-chair as a special advisor.

Ariana sat in the second row of the gallery behind us, surrounded by two security officers from Marcus’s firm. She wore a tailored black suit, her hair styled neatly to partially cover the bandages on her face. Her posture was erect, her chin held high—the strength her father had given her finally returning to her eyes.

Across the room at the defense table, Mark sat wearing a wrinkled navy suit he had been wearing since his arrest. His hair was messy, his eyes bloodshot, and his demeanor shifted between arrogant irritation and visible panic. Beside him sat his senior defense attorney, a high-priced corporate defender named Arthur Sterling, who looked thoroughly stressed.

In the front row of the public gallery, Helen sat alone, wearing dark sunglasses, nervously clutching her designer handbag as local court reporters whispered around her.

Judge Thomas Wright, a veteran jurist known for his absolute intolerance for domestic violence and corporate fraud, took his seat at the bench and slammed his heavy wooden gavel down.

“We are here in the matter of the State versus Mark Vance, Case Number 44-802,” Judge Wright announced, his voice booming through the courtroom. “We are considering the State’s motion for high bail, an extended protective order, and the emergency petition for a comprehensive asset freeze filed by the victim’s counsel.”

Mark’s attorney, Sterling, immediately stood up, leaning against his podium. “Your Honor, this entire proceeding has been wildly exaggerated by the defense. This is fundamentally a private, tragic domestic dispute between a husband and wife that has been aggressively weaponized by the victim's mother, Mrs. Elena Vance, who is using her legal influence to ruin my client's business reputation.”

“Weaponized, Mr. Sterling?” Judge Wright asked, raising an eyebrow. “Have you reviewed the evidence submitted with the State’s emergency motion?”

“Your Honor,” Sterling argued smoothly, “the alleged physical altercations are contextually disputed. My client was under immense professional stress, and his wife initiated an argument—”

“Mr. Sterling,” Judge Wright interrupted, his tone turning dangerously sharp. “I have personally reviewed the high-definition indoor security footage recovered from your client's dining room. I watched your client strike his defenseless wife three times across the face and kick her while she was on the floor. I also watched his mother clap in approval.”

A collective gasp echoed through the crowded public gallery. Reporters frantically scribbled on their pads.

In the gallery, Helen pulled her sunglasses down, her face turning crimson with embarrassment as people turned to stare at her.

“Furthermore,” Judge Wright continued, turning a page on his dossier, “the forensic financial audit provided by Vance & Associates demonstrates a clear, calculated pattern of fraudulent asset transfers. Over seven hundred thousand dollars was systematically drained from the victim's inheritance account into offshore entities registered to the defendant and his mother within days of physical intimidation events.”

“Your Honor!” Sterling panicked, realizing the narrative had completely spun out of his control. “Freezing my client's commercial accounts will cause the immediate collapse of Vance Commercial Logistics! He will default on municipal contract bids!”

“That, Mr. Sterling, is the direct consequence of engaging in criminal racketeering and grand larceny within a marriage,” Judge Wright declared firmly.

The judge picked up his pen and signed the thick stack of orders sitting on his desk.

“Regarding bail: set at two million dollars, cash or corporate bond only. The defendant will surrender his passport immediately and wear an electronic ankle monitor upon any release. The emergency protective order is granted in full—neither Mark Vance nor Helen Vance may come within one thousand yards of Ariana Vance, her residence, or her place of employment.”

Judge Wright brought his gavel down with a loud, final CRACK!

“And regarding the emergency asset freeze petition: granted in full. All personal, corporate, and offshore accounts tied to Mark Vance, Helen Vance, and Vance Commercial Logistics are hereby frozen pending full criminal trial and civil restitution proceedings.”

Mark jumped out of his chair, his face contorted in absolute rage as bailiffs immediately moved in to grab his arms.

“You can't do this to me!” Mark screamed across the courtroom, struggling against the guards, his eyes fixed on me. “You ruined me, you old witch! That money belonged to my family! Ariana is my wife!”

I stood up slowly from the prosecution table, leaning my hands flat against the polished oak wood, looking him directly in the eye with cool, calm triumph.

“Ariana was never your property, Mark,” I said, my voice carrying clearly over his frantic shouting. “And you are about to discover what happens when you try to steal from the daughter of a real lawyer.”

Bailiffs dragged Mark kicking and screaming through the heavy door leading back to the holding cells, his loud shouts echoing down the hallway until the heavy door slammed shut.
