Chapter 2 - The Severed Thread

The silence that fell over the garden was so heavy that the gentle rustle of the rose leaves sounded like crackling fire.

Chloe was the first to notice the shift in atmosphere. Her eyes drifted away from her phone screen, catching the tall, motionless figure standing twenty feet away. The glass of champagne slipped from her fingers, shattering against the flagstone floor with a sharp, liquid crash.

"D... Daniel?" Chloe gasped, her voice squeaking with sudden terror.

Vanessa whipped her head around, her white silk blouse rustling. The color drained from her face so fast that her brightly painted crimson lips looked like a bloodstain against her skin. Her hand holding the heavy kitchen shears dropped to her side, but it was far too late to hide them.

"Daniel!" Vanessa stammered, her voice instantly shifting from icy contempt to frantic, high-pitched panic. "Darling! You're... you're home early! We didn't expect you until tonight!"

Daniel didn't answer. He set his leather travel bag down on the gravel with a slow, deliberate movement. His jaw was set so tightly that the muscles along his cheekbones twitched. He walked forward, his heavy leather shoes crunching methodically against the stone path, his eyes fixed entirely on the locks of silver hair lying in the soil at my feet.

"Daniel, sweetie, let me explain," Vanessa babbled, taking a quick step back from my chair and dropping the scissors into the rose bush behind her. "It's not what it looks like! Your mother... she was feeling so overwhelmed by her long hair. She told me it was giving her headaches! She begged me to help her trim it before the bridal shower!"

I remained seated, my hands still folded in my lap, looking up at my son without saying a word. I didn't need to yell. I didn't need to play the victim. The truth was written on the ground.

Daniel stopped two feet from my chair. He looked down at my altered hair, then at my face. He saw the cold, stoic dignity in my eyes, and then he looked at Vanessa, whose hands were trembling uncontrollably.

"You were recording it," Daniel said. His voice was dangerously low, a flat, vibrating tone that contained no emotion whatsoever.

"What?" Vanessa squeaked.

Daniel stepped over to Chloe, snatched the smartphone directly out of her shaking hand, and glanced at the screen. The recording was still active, the digital timer ticking away in the top corner. He hit pause, rewound the video by fifteen seconds, and pressed play.

The speaker on the phone broadcast Vanessa’s clear, unedited voice into the quiet garden air:

“You'll tell Daniel you wanted a fresh, modern look... Who do you think he'll believe, Eleanor? His sad, old, lonely mother... or the woman carrying his future? Yes... I'm pregnant.”

The audio played with brutal clarity. Every cruel word, every mocking cadence echoed off the brick walls of the house.

Daniel stood completely still as the video finished. He handed the phone back to Chloe, who looked as if she was about to faint.

"Daniel, please," Vanessa sobbed, stepping forward and reaching for his arm, her eyes flooding with forced, desperate tears. "I was just stressed! The wedding planning has been so hard, and your mother has been so passive-aggressive! I lost my temper for one second! You know how much I love you! You know we're starting a family now!"

Daniel pulled his arm away from her touch as if her hand was coated in poison. He looked at her flat stomach, his eyes burning with a mixture of shock and deep, agonizing betrayal.

"You're pregnant?" Daniel asked quietly.

"Yes!" Vanessa cried, clasping her hands over her heart. "I was going to surprise you tonight with a romantic dinner! That's why I was so emotional! It's the hormones, Daniel! Please, you have to forgive me... for the baby's sake!"

I let out a soft, single breath, standing up from the wooden chair. I smoothed down the front of my linen trousers, turned to my son, and finally spoke.

"Daniel," I said softly. "Before you say another word to this woman, we are going to walk inside to my study."

May you like

"Eleanor, stay out of this!" Vanessa shrieked, her artificial composure entirely fracturing into raw aggression. "This is between me and my fiancé! You've tried to ruin our relationship from day one!"

"It isn't between just you two anymore, Vanessa," I replied coolly, stepping past her without giving her a single glance. "Because in ten minutes, my son is going to realize that every single word that has ever come out of your mouth since the day he met you has been a calculated lie."
