Chapter 7 - The Mastermind's Shadow

Despite the arrests of Karen Gable and Richard Sterling, the nightmare was far from over.

The next morning at 8:00 AM, the hospital was surrounded by news vans, satellite trucks, and dozens of reporters shouting questions at the main entrance. The story of the "Hospital Baby Swap Ring" had leaked to the national press, sending shockwaves through the medical community.

Inside Room 308, two armed state troopers stood guard outside my door.

Mark, Chloe, and I sat together on the bed, watching the television news coverage. On the screen was a live feed of Richard Sterling being led into the county courthouse in handcuffs, his head ducked down to avoid the flashing cameras.

A soft knock rattled the door panel.

Sergeant Miller stepped into the room, accompanied by a woman in a dark blue business suit with silver hair and a sharp, commanding presence.

"Nora, Mark," Sergeant Miller said. "This is Assistant District Attorney Victoria Vance. She is leading the prosecution against Sterling and Gable."

Victoria Vance stepped up to my bed, holding out her hand. "Mrs. Miller, I want to personally promise you that the people responsible for targeting your family will spend the rest of their natural lives in a state penitentiary."

"Is Sterling talking?" Mark asked immediately.

Victoria Vance pulled up a chair and sat down, her face grim. "Sterling signed a partial confession an hour ago in exchange for removing the death penalty from his indictment. He confirmed everything Detective Cole uncovered last night."

She opened a leather file folder on her lap.

"Sterling was the administrative middleman," Vance explained. "He erased the camera footage, altered the nursery logs, and paid Nurse Gable to perform the physical swaps. But he was not the mastermind behind the ring."

"Who is?" I asked, holding Leo tight against my chest.

"A woman named Dr. Eleanor Vance—no relation to me," Victoria Vance revealed. "She was the former Chief of Obstetrics at Saint Jude’s, currently serving on the hospital's Board of Trustees. She ran a high-society fertility clinic in downtown Chicago, catering exclusively to billionaire clients, corrupt politicians, and international elites."

My heart dropped into my stomach.

"Dr. Eleanor Vance?" I gasped. "She was the charge nurse who scanned my wristband yesterday!"

"Yes," Victoria Vance nodded grimly. "She stepped in personally yesterday afternoon to control the damage when your daughter raised the alarm. When she realized the police were involved, she ordered Karen Gable to enter your room last night with the potassium chloride to eliminate the primary evidence—your son."

"Where is she now?" Mark demanded, his fists clenching.

"She fled the hospital at 4:00 AM," Sergeant Miller answered. "An Interpol Red Notice has been issued for her arrest. Federal marshals have raided her penthouse suite downtown and seized her private records."

"Did she escape the country?" I asked, my voice rising in panic.

"Her private jet is grounded at O'Hare International Airport," Miller assured me. "Her passport has been revoked. She is trapped in this city, Mrs. Miller. It is only a matter of hours before the FBI tracks her down."

Suddenly, my personal cell phone—sitting on the bedside table—began to ring.

The screen displayed an unknown, encrypted caller ID.

Sergeant Miller immediately pulled a small recording device from his pocket and connected it to my phone line, signaling for me to answer.

"Put it on speaker," Miller whispered.

I took a deep breath, swiped the screen, and pressed the speakerphone button.

"Hello?" I said, my voice cold and steady.

A woman's smooth, sophisticated, and completely calm voice echoed through the room.

"Hello, Nora," Dr. Eleanor Vance spoke into the speaker. "I must compliment you on your resilience. And your daughter, Chloe... she is remarkably observant for a ten-year-old."

Mark took a step toward the phone, but Sergeant Miller held up a hand to stop him.

"Where are you, Eleanor?" I asked, keeping my tone flat.

"I am somewhere very safe, my dear," Eleanor Vance chuckled softly—a chilling, hollow sound. "I am calling to offer you a settlement. One mother to another."
