Chapter 4 - The Sound of the Gavel

Before Beatrice could shout for the staff again, the heavy double oak doors of the private dining room were pushed open from the outside.
The sound wasn't the soft, polite click of a waiter entering with a tray of desserts. It was the heavy, synchronized impact of multiple sets of tactical boots striking the polished marble floor. Six individuals stepped into the room, moving with an absolute, professional authority that immediately froze the entire Ashcroft family in their seats.
At the front of the group was a tall, sharp-featured woman in a dark gray federal suit, wearing a gold shield pinned directly to her lapel. Behind her were four armed agents wearing dark blue jackets with the bold, yellow letters FBI emblazoned across the chest, accompanied by two forensic auditors carrying large, industrial-grade digital storage cases.
"Federal Bureau of Investigation," the lead woman announced, her voice echoing through the vaulted ceiling of the dining room like a thunderclap. "Everyone remain seated and keep your hands visible on top of the table. Do not attempt to touch your mobile devices or personal effects."
Graham completely collapsed backward into his chair, his mouth hanging open in a silent, horrified gasp. "No... no, this can't be happening. There’s been a mistake... we're the Ashcrofts..."
Beatrice stepped forward, her face turning a deep, angry shade of crimson as she pointed a manicured finger at the lead agent. "How dare you interrupt a private family event! Do you know who my lawyers are? I will have your badges by sunrise! This is an illegal intrusion!"
"Mrs. Ashcroft, my name is Special Agent Sarah Vance, Department of Justice Corporate Crimes Division," the lead agent said, completely ignoring Beatrice's outburst as she pulled a thick, federally stamped document from her leather portfolio. "I am executing a federal arrest warrant for Graham Ashcroft for grand larceny, wire fraud, and the intentional misappropriation of federal maritime grants under Title 18, United States Code."
Agent Vance stepped closer to the table, her eyes scanning the terrified faces of the relatives before landing squarely on Evelyn. She offered a brief, respectful nod. "We have received the completed data dump, Compliance Officer Harper. The grand jury signed the indictment forty-five minutes ago."
Evelyn stood up slowly, her dark dress still stained with the balsamic dressing Beatrice had thrown at her. She picked up the silver flash drive from the table and handed it directly to Agent Vance. "The complete metadata logs, the physical device signatures, and the offshore routing paths are all contained inside, Agent Vance. I’ve also included the secondary corporate ledgers detailing Beatrice Ashcroft’s personal signatures authorizing the tax evasion shields for the last four fiscal years."

Beatrice’s wineglass finally slipped from her hand, crashing against the marble floor and splashing the deep red liquid across her gold stiletto heels—the exact heels she had used to trip Evelyn’s chair. "You... you miserable, plotting little bitch," Beatrice whispered, her voice cracking into a high-pitched, desperate shriek. "You did this. You planned this whole thing!"
"I didn't plan your greed, Beatrice," Evelyn said, her voice dropping into a tone of absolute, chilling finality as she looked at her mother-in-law. "I simply audited it. You told me in the restroom that a tool is discarded the moment it stops working efficiently. You were entirely correct. You and your son have become a significant liability to my corporate record. So today, I am discarding you."
