Nearly All Dems Oppose SAVE Act Despite Broad Public Support for Voter ID

The SAVE America Act (H.R. 22) would require documentary proof of U.S. citizenship — such as a passport or birth certificate — when registering to vote in federal elections.

It would also require government-issued photo identification for in-person voting and direct states to verify voter rolls against federal databases to ensure only citizens are registered.

“All voters must show proof of citizenship in order to vote,” Trump said at a recent Republican event in Miami. He later posted on Truth Social that the bill “must be done immediately” and warned he may refuse to sign other legislation until Congress sends it to his desk. “MUST GO TO THE FRONT OF THE LINE… GO FOR THE GOLD,” he wrote.

Polling data consistently shows broad support for voter ID requirements across party and demographic lines. According to Pew Research Center, 83% of Americans favor requiring government-issued photo ID to vote, including 95% of Republicans and 71% of Democrats.

Gallup polling has found 84% overall support for photo ID requirements and 83% support for requiring proof of citizenship when registering to vote for the first time.
