Chapter 4 - The Clinical Conspiracy

Vivian’s eyes narrowed to tiny slits of dark fury. She reached out, her fingers grabbing Emily’s wrist with a strength that belied her slender frame.

“What is this on your sleeve, Emily?” Vivian hissed, her clinical mask completely slipping, revealing the cold, calculating monster underneath.

“It’s... it’s just baking soda, Dr. Cross,” Emily stammered, trying to pull away. “I was cleaning the silver in the dining room.”

“You’re lying,” Vivian whispered.

She threw Emily backward against the industrial washing machine. She turned toward the dark service hallway, her hand reaching into her medical bag for what Logan knew would be a sedative or a weapon.

Logan didn't wait.

He stepped out from the shadows, carrying Caleb securely in his left arm, his right hand free. He slammed the heavy laundry door open, the metal clanging against the wall with the force of a gunshot.

“Vivian,” Logan said, his voice a low, terrifying growl.

Vivian spun around, her face instantly shifting back into a mask of professional concern, though her eyes remained wide with panic. “Logan! What are you doing? Why is Caleb out of bed? He’s in a highly fragile state, the cold air could cause a bronchospasm!”

“The only thing causing him bronchospasms,” Logan said, stepping closer, “is the poison you’ve been stuffing into his pillows.”

Vivian went completely pale. Her gaze darted from Logan to the wet, shivering bundle of Caleb, and then to Emily. She realized, with absolute certainty, that her three-year game was over.

“Logan, you’re hysterical,” Vivian said, her voice trembling but she tried to maintain her authority. “You’re letting a common housemaid fill your head with delusions. I have dedicated three years of my life to saving your son!”

“You’ve dedicated three years to collecting fifty thousand dollars a month from Vanguard Biopharma,” Logan spat, his eyes blazing with a lethal intensity. “I’ve seen your offshore accounts, Vivian. I’ve seen your journal. I know about the oleandrin.”

Vivian’s hand shook. She looked at the thermal bottle in her hand, then suddenly raised it, aiming to throw the toxic contents directly into Logan’s face.

But Emily was faster.

With a cry of defiance, Emily lunged forward, grabbing Vivian’s arm. The thermal bottle slipped from Vivian's fingers, crashing onto the concrete floor. The thick, yellowish-green liquid spilled out, sizzling slightly against the chemical cleaner residue on the floor.

“Get him out of here, Logan!” Emily screamed, struggling to keep Vivian pinned against the washing machine.

Logan did not hesitate. He sprinted out the side door into the freezing rain, his boots splashing through the puddles as he made a mad dash for Emily’s beat-up Honda Civic. He threw Caleb into the backseat, securing him with the seatbelt, and climbed into the driver’s seat.

He shoved the key into the ignition, the engine roaring to life just as Vivian burst through the laundry door, her face contorted in a mask of pure, demonic rage.

She ran toward the car, but Logan slammed the gear into reverse, spinning the tires against the wet gravel, and sped down the dark, winding driveway of the estate.

Through the rearview mirror, he saw Emily run out of the laundry door, her phone already pressed to her ear, calling the police.

“We’re safe, Caleb,” Logan breathed, his hands shaking on the steering wheel as the windshield wipers struggled against the deluge. “We’re safe now.”

“I believe you, Dad,” Caleb whispered from the backseat, his eyes closing as a deep, natural exhaustion finally took over. But for the first time in three years, he wasn't shivering.
