Chapter 10 - The New Family

One year later.

The Bedford hills were green and vibrant under the warm summer sun.

The west wing of the Vale estate had been completely rebuilt. The cold black marble and iron bars were gone, replaced by warm oak flooring, broad sunlit windows, and white walls covered in colorful framed drawings made by four children.

In the rear garden, a massive wooden playground had been constructed near the ancient oak trees, complete with four swings, two high slides, and a custom fort built to resemble a medieval castle.

Hannah sat on a stone bench near the rose garden, dressed in a comfortable yellow sundress, a heavy platinum band sparkling on the third finger of her left hand.

She was watching the lawn.

Sophie, now eight, was leading a fierce military maneuver across the grass, holding a plastic sword. Behind her sprinted Lucas, Mason, and Theo—all three wearing matching blue capelets, shouting at the top of their lungs as they chased the estate's new golden retriever puppy through the sprinklers.

The sound of real, uninhibited child laughter echoed across the three-acre property, filling the warm air with pure joy.

A pair of large, strong arms wrapped around Hannah’s waist from behind, pulling her back against a broad, warm chest.

Dominic leaned down, burying his face in the crook of her neck, pressing a soft kiss against her skin. He was wearing a simple navy linen shirt with no tie, his dark hair slightly ruffled by the summer breeze.

"You're staring again, Mrs. Vale," Dominic murmured against her skin, his raspy voice filled with a deep, contented warmth.

Hannah leaned her head back against his shoulder, placing her hand over his resting on her stomach.

"I'm just watching my kingdom," she said, turning her face to kiss his jaw.

"Our kingdom," Dominic corrected softly.

From the lawn, Mason caught sight of them.

"GROSS!" Mason shrieked, stopping near the sprinklers. "DAD IS KISSING HANNAH AGAIN!"

"HE DOES IT ALL THE TIME!" Lucas called out, running past with his cape flapping in the wind. "IT'S DISGUSTING!"

Theo stopped near the bench, holding the puppy in his arms, his gray eyes shining with quiet happiness. "I think it's okay," he announced calmly. "It means we get cake after dinner."

Sophie ran up to the bench, putting her hands on her hips, her brown eyes dancing with mischief. "Dominic! You promised we could go to the ice cream shop in town at four o'clock!"

Dominic stood up, keeping his arm wrapped securely around Hannah’s waist, looking down at his four children.

The cold, terrifying mafia king of New York was completely gone. In his place stood a man who was whole, loved, and entirely at peace.

"If you can all be in the SUV in three minutes with your shoes on," Dominic announced, "I'll buy the whole shop."

The four children let out a collective cheer and sprinted toward the house, their muddy shoes leaving prints across the pristine stone patio.

Hannah turned in Dominic’s arms, wrapping her hands around his neck, looking up into his storm-gray eyes that were now filled with light.

"You're spoiling them, Mr. Vale," she teased.

Dominic smiled—a wide, breathtaking smile—and pulled her close for another deep, lingering kiss.

"I have a lot of time to make up for, Mrs. Vale," he whispered against her lips. "And a whole lifetime to spend loving you."

Hand in hand, the broke single mom from Queens and the most feared man in New York walked together toward the house, leaving the shadows of the past far behind them in the bright afternoon sun.
