Chapter 7 - The Inheritance of Trust

Three months later, the grounds of the Moretti estate looked entirely different.

The gray, decaying chill of late winter had given way to the vibrant, blooming greens of early summer. Sunlight poured through the tall leaded windows of the west-wing office, warming the dark walnut panels and casting a golden glow across the Persian rug.

Victor Vance’s trial had lasted exactly four days. Armed with the toxicological lab reports, the audio confessions, and the forensic evidence recovered from his downtown properties, federal prosecutors had secured an airtight conviction without a single plea bargain. Moretti Holdings was restructured, purged of its corrupt board members, and returned to Alessandro’s absolute control.

And me?

I was no longer scrubbing the East Parlor floors.

My official title was now Executive Director of Estate Operations—a position Alessandro had created specifically for me, with a salary that wiped out every debt, secured a college fund for Emma, and provided a life I had never dared to dream of.

On a warm Saturday afternoon, I was organizing documents at the large mahogany desk when the door swung open.

Emma marched in, wearing a bright yellow sundress, holding Mr. Rabbit under one arm and a fresh plate of warm chocolate chip cookies in the other.

"Mr. Moretti," she announced cheerfully, climbing uninvited onto the leather chair beside his wheelchair. "I brought snack time."

Alessandro looked up from his monitor, a genuine, unburdened smile softening the sharp edges of his face. He reached out with his right hand—which had grown steadily stronger over the past months through intensive physical therapy and a complete absence of neurotoxins—and took a cookie from the plate.

"Thank you, Inspector Emma," Alessandro said, his voice warm and rich. "Did you inspect the kitchens today?"

"Yes," Emma nodded seriously, kicking her dangling legs against the chair. "The bakers made brownies. I told them you like chocolate better."

"You did, did you?" Alessandro chuckled, looking past Emma toward the desk where I stood sorting files. His steel-gray eyes met mine, softening with a depth of emotion that words could never quite capture.

"She runs this house now," Alessandro said to me, taking a bite of the cookie. "I’m just a tenant."

"We both are, Mr. Moretti," I smiled softly, walking over to adjust the window blinds to let in more of the summer breeze. "We both are."

He reached out, his hand gently catching mine for a brief, warm second before pulling back.

"Call me Alessandro," he said quietly. "We're past titles, Nora. You saved my life."

"You saved ours, too," I replied, looking out over the sprawling green lawns where the shadows of the past had finally been washed away by the light.
