Chapter 5 - The Debt Paid in Full

Three months later, the morning sun rose over the pristine waters of the Valerius private estate in southern France.

Eva was running across the lush green lawns, her laughter echoing through the warm air. The wound on her forehead had healed beautifully, leaving nothing but a tiny, almost invisible silver line near her hairline—a badge of survival and a reminder of the night we were finally set free. She was wearing a beautiful, simple yellow sundress, her golden hair blowing in the wind as she chased a family of swans near the private lake.

I sat on the marble terrace, a cup of fresh espresso in my hand, watching her. I was dressed in a tailored cream-colored trousers suit, my hair styled perfectly, the heavy gold signet ring of the Valerius family gleaming on my finger.

Alistair walked out onto the terrace, setting a folder on the table.

“The final corporate liquidation of the Sterling Group was completed yesterday morning,” he said, sitting down opposite me. “Arthur’s father has been sentenced to twelve years in a federal penitentiary for financial fraud and tax evasion. Arthur himself has filed for personal bankruptcy. He’s currently living in a rented, single-room apartment in the industrial district, working as an entry-level clerk for a shipping company we secretly own.”

I took a slow sip of my coffee. “And Vivian?”

“Her social standing is completely destroyed,” Alistair replied with a slight, satisfied smirk. “The video of her tearing her own dress and framing a six-year-old was leaked to every major social media outlet and high-society blog. She was dropped by her agency, her sponsors have sued her for breach of contract, and she’s currently facing civil charges for defamation and malicious property damage.”

I looked out at the lake, feeling the cool breeze against my skin. For six years, I had believed that love required me to shrink myself, to pretend to be someone I wasn't just to make a insecure man feel powerful. I had paid an incredibly high price for that mistake, but the debt had finally been settled.

My phone on the table buzzed. It was a message from Benedict, containing a copy of the finalized divorce decree and the sole custody papers for Eva.

Arthur Sterling had signed them without a single fight. He had no money, no lawyers, and no courage left to face the wrath of the Valerius family.

Eva ran up the steps of the terrace, her cheeks flushed with health and happiness. She threw her small arms around my neck, kissing my cheek.

“Look, Mommy!” she beamed, holding up a beautiful, wild white flower she had found near the water. “I found this for you. It’s strong, and it doesn't break even when the wind blows.”

I smiled, pulling my daughter close, her warmth filling my chest with a peace I had never known in that cold, dark mansion.

“Thank you, my sweet girl,” I whispered, kissing her forehead. “We don't have to worry about the wind anymore. We are finally home.”
