PART 1: THE SECOND DAY OF MY MARRIAGE

The first thing I felt was not pain.
It was disbelief.
The sound of his hand hitting my face echoed through the kitchen.
A sharp, humiliating sound.
A sound I never imagined would come from my husband.
Not after only two days of marriage.
Not after the vows.
Not after he promised everyone I was the woman who changed his life.
I stood frozen beside the marble counter.
My fingers slowly moved to my cheek.

It was already burning.
Daniel stood in front of me, breathing heavily, his hand still half-raised.
His wedding ring caught the sunlight coming through the windows.
That detail hurt the most.
That symbol of love.
On the same hand that had just hurt me.
“How dare you order her around?” Daniel snapped.
I stared at him.
“Order her around?”
My voice barely came out.
Vanessa, his younger sister, sat comfortably on one of the kitchen stools.
She looked amused.
Almost proud.
Daniel pointed toward her.
“She is my sister.”
Then he pointed at me.
“You are the wife.”
A cold silence filled the room.
“Know your place.”
Those words hurt more than the slap.
Because they showed me exactly who he was.
Behind him, his mother Margaret sat at the breakfast table.
She didn’t look shocked.
She didn’t stand.
She didn’t ask if I was okay.
She simply continued drinking her coffee.
His father folded his newspaper slowly.
Then sighed.
As if I was the inconvenience.
As if my pain was a minor interruption.
Vanessa smiled.
Then she lifted her coffee cup.
And deliberately poured the rest onto the floor.
The liquid spread across the expensive tiles.
“Clean that too,” she said.
For a moment, I couldn’t believe what was happening.
Forty-eight hours ago, they called me family.
They hugged me.
They smiled for pictures.
They raised glasses and welcomed me into their world.
Now I saw the truth.
The kindness was a performance.

The wedding was just the curtain opening.
And the real show had begun.
