Chapter 6 - The Hearing

Three weeks after the assault, the county courthouse in downtown Charleston was packed to maximum capacity for Linda Whitmore’s formal bail revocation and pretrial hearing.

Local news vans lined the perimeter of the stone building, and dozens of spectators crammed into the wooden pews of Courtroom 3B.

I walked into the courtroom leaning lightly on Daniel’s arm, wearing a conservative dark blue dress. My surgical wounds were finally healing on the outside, though a deep, thick scar remained across my lower abdomen—a permanent physical reminder of the violence I had survived. Megan walked directly behind us, sitting in the front row of the gallery to offer us her full support.

Across the carpeted aisle sat Linda Whitmore at the defense table, alongside Arthur and Julian Vance.

Linda was dressed in a dull grey suit, her once-immaculate hair now dull and unstyled. Her face had grown gaunt, and deep dark circles sat beneath her bitter eyes. When she turned and saw Daniel and me sitting at the prosecution table beside District Attorney Marcus Vance, her lip curled into a vicious, silent sneer.

She still believed she was immune to consequences.

Judge Eleanor Vance—a formidable, silver-haired jurist known for her strict adherence to the law—struck her heavy wooden gavel against the sound block, bringing the noisy room to absolute silence.

“Case number 2026-CR-8841: The State of South Carolina versus Linda Marie Whitmore,” Judge Vance announced crisply. “We are here today to address the defense’s motion for bail modification, as well as the prosecution’s emergency motion to revoke bail based on new evidence of witness intimidation.”

Julian Vance stood up smoothly, adjusting his suit jacket.

“Your Honor,” the defense attorney argued persuasively, “my client is a sixty-two-year-old widow with deep roots in this community and zero prior criminal record. The incident at the hospital was an unfortunate, tragic family misunderstanding brought on by extreme emotional distress. Mrs. Whitmore simply wished to check on her daughter-in-law’s welfare, slipped in a crowded room, and accidentally made physical contact with the patient. The charge of felony assault is absurdly inflated, and we request an immediate reduction of bail to fifty thousand dollars.”

Judge Vance peered over her reading glasses, her expression unreadable. “Does the prosecution wish to respond?”

District Attorney Marcus Vance stood up calmly, holding a digital tablet.

“Your Honor,” the DA began, his voice resonating through the silent courtroom. “The defense’s claim that this was an ‘accidental contact’ is a grotesque lie. We have submitted into evidence the hospital room’s HD security audio and video footage, which clearly captures the defendant screaming abuse at a sedated patient, raising her hand, and deliberately striking a fresh, unguarded surgical incision with maximum force.”

The DA pressed a button on his tablet, and the courtroom’s large overhead monitors lit up.

A collective gasp echoed through the gallery as the video played. The entire room watched in horror as Linda marched up to my hospital bed, screamed her hateful words, and slammed her hand down onto my body, followed by my blood-curdling scream and the immediate eruption of blood through my gown.

Linda turned pale as ice at the defense table, her hands trembling uncontrollably as the video played again in slow motion.

“Furthermore, Your Honor,” the DA continued loudly over the murmurs of the crowd, “since being granted initial bail, the defendant and her brother, Arthur Whitmore, have engaged in a relentless campaign of witness intimidation, economic coercion, and character assassination against the victim and key witnesses.”

The DA handed a thick binder of evidence to the bailiff, who passed it up to the judge’s bench.

“Included in those documents are recorded phone calls of Arthur Whitmore threatening the lead investigator, police reports regarding the defacement of the victim’s home, and evidence of illegal attempts to bribe the victim with half a million dollars to alter her testimony,” the DA concluded firmly. “Linda Whitmore poses a direct, violent, and corrupt danger to the victim and the integrity of this court. The State requests that bail be revoked entirely, and the defendant be remanded to county custody pending trial.”

Judge Vance spent five long, agonizing minutes reviewing the video footage and the documented evidence of intimidation.

When she finally raised her head, her eyes were burning with absolute, righteous thunder.
