Chapter 3 - The Storm in the ER

The quiet of the recovery room was shattered an hour later by the sharp, rhythmic click of expensive heels echoing down the hallway. The sound was aggressive, demanding attention long before the person carrying it arrived.

The door was flung open, and Carmen swept into the room.

She wore an elegant, tailored camel-hair coat over a black silk blouse. A designer leather handbag was slung over her forearm, and her perfectly styled hair was dry, untouched by the storm outside. Her face was a mask of cold indignation.

"Where are those babies?" Carmen demanded, her voice cutting through the sterile room like a knife. "I am their grandmother, and I demand that they be released to me immediately."

Camila instantly shivered, pressing her small body as far back into the hospital mattress as she could, trying to hide behind the protective bulk of Nurse Margaret.

"Excuse me, ma'am," Laura Bennett said, standing up and placing herself between Carmen and the bassinets. "This is a restricted pediatric unit. You cannot simply walk in here."

"I am Carmen Ross," the woman announced, drawing herself up to her full height. "And those children belong to my daughter, Anna, who is clearly unfit to care for them. I received a call from a neighbor saying the police were at her trailer. This is an embarrassment. I will be taking my grandchildren home where they belong."

"You wouldn't open the door," a tiny voice whispered from the bed.

Carmen’s eyes snapped to Camila. For a fraction of a second, a flicker of something resembling guilt crossed her features, but it was quickly replaced by a cold, glittering anger.

"Camila, do not tell lies in front of these people," Carmen said, her voice smooth but warning. "Children misunderstand things when they are frightened. You came to my house in the middle of the night babbling nonsense. I told you to go back inside because it was raining, and I assumed your mother was right behind you."

"She told you the babies were freezing," Laura countered, her voice dangerously calm as she stepped closer to the older woman. "She stood on your porch in the freezing rain, and you left her out there."

"My daughter has spent years filling that child’s head with lies to make me look like the villain!" Carmen spat, her manicured hand reaching out toward Sophie’s bassinet. "Now, get out of my way. I am their legal guardian if their mother is incapacitated."

Nurse Margaret stepped forward, her physical presence blocking Carmen’s path entirely. "No child is leaving this room, Mrs. Ross. Not tonight. Not with you."

"Do you know who I am?" Carmen laughed, a harsh, humorless sound. "I fund the annual gala for this hospital's foundation. I can have your license revoked by morning."

"And I am the county social worker assigned to this case," Laura said, her voice steady and resolute.
