Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary of Wolves

The Volkov estate was less of a house and more of a gothic fortress, carved into the snowy crags of the Adirondack Mountains. Towering iron gates topped with razor-sharp spikes opened silently as the sedan approached, closing instantly behind them. The grounds were patrolled by heavily armed men in tactical gear, accompanied by massive, silent guard dogs.

Inside, the mansion was a sprawling maze of dark mahogany, marble floors, and priceless art, but it felt entirely devoid of warmth. It was a place built for survival, not for living.

Nikolai led Clara up a grand sweeping staircase to a heavily secluded wing of the house. Two guards stood outside the double doors.

“This is the nursery,” Nikolai said, pushing the doors open.

Clara gasped softly. The room was massive, featuring a beautiful crib carved from dark walnut, a plush rocking chair, and shelves lined with untouched toys. It was clear the room had been prepared for a child, but the clinical, sterile layout made it obvious no mother had ever set foot in it.

“My sister, Leo's mother, built this before she was poisoned,” Nikolai said, his voice dropping an octave, a rare flicker of raw grief crossing his stoic features. “She knew they were coming for her. She made me swear to protect him.”

Clara walked over to the crib, gently laying the sleeping Leo onto the soft silk sheets. She turned to Nikolai, her arms feeling suddenly light and empty. “If your uncle Mikhail wants him dead, how deep does the conspiracy go? Who can you actually trust?”

“No one,” Nikolai said flatly. “Not even the men outside this door. Only Dimitri, and even then, I keep my eyes open. Tomorrow, the Council is hosting a winter gala at our downtown manor. It is a traditional gathering of the five main families. Mikhail thinks he has already won. He thinks Leo died in the hospital.”

“Then why go?” Clara asked, her brow furrowing. “If they want you dead, you’re walking into a trap.”

“I am going to show them that the Volkov line remains unbroken,” Nikolai stated, a terrifying, predatory smile touching his lips. “And I need you to come with me.”

Clara took a step back, her heart spiking. “No. Absolutely not. I am not walking into a den of murderers. Look at me, Nikolai! I smell like smoke and sour milk. I don't belong in your world.”

Nikolai stepped closer, his intense gaze pinning her in place. He reached out, his large, calloused hand gently gripping her chin, forcing her to look up at him. His touch was surprisingly warm against her cold skin. “They already know your face, Clara. If I leave you here, and Mikhail’s men breach the perimeter, you die. If you are by my side, under my personal protection, they cannot touch you without starting an open war on the gala floor. I will have a custom dress made. You will present yourself as Leo’s official nanny, a woman of high standing. You will keep him safe in the private VIP lounge while I handle the council.”

Clara stared into his eyes, looking for any sign of hesitation. There was none. Nikolai Volkov was a man who moved mountains through sheer force of will. But more than that, she looked back at the crib. Leo was breathing softly, his tiny chest rising and falling. If she walked away, this baby would die.

“Fine,” Clara whispered, pulling her chin away from his grip, though her skin tingled where he had touched her. “But if anything happens to that boy, I will kill you myself.”

Nikolai let out a short, dark chuckle. “I would expect nothing less, Clara Reyes.”
