Chapter 7 - The Interrogation and the Justice System

The administrative offices of the Federal Bureau of Investigation at Denver International Airport were cold, sterile, and lit by buzzing fluorescent strips.

Cynthia Vale sat across from two special agents. The entitlement that had sustained her at thirty-one thousand feet had entirely dissolved, replaced by a frantic, defensive desperation. Her designer purse sat on the floor beside her chair, looking small and insignificant.

"I am the victim here!" Cynthia yelled, slamming her hand on the metal table. "The airline crew targeted me! They are protecting the pilot's daughter because of nepotism! I want to speak to my lawyer. I want to file a lawsuit against Crescent Pacific!"

The older of the two agents, a man named Miller, didn't flinch. He slowly opened a manila folder, revealing several typed statements and a digital storage drive.

"Ms. Vale," Agent Miller said, his voice flat and devoid of sympathy. "We have already interviewed four passengers who sat in your immediate vicinity. We have written statements from the senior flight attendant and the first officer. Furthermore, two passengers captured the immediate aftermath on their mobile phones, including your statements where you admitted to pushing the child because she was 'in your space.'"

Cynthia’s jaw dropped. "That’s out of context! The plane shook!"

"The flight data recorder shows a minor lateral variance of less than 0.1 Gs at the time of the incident," the second agent added, looking up from a laptop. "Standard light turbulence. Not enough to dislodge a cup unless it was actively propelled. You were warned to keep the lid on. You refused. You then engaged in an argument with the crew, failing to comply with safety instructions while the aircraft was in an emergency state."

"This is ridiculous!" Cynthia cried, tears of anger finally spilling over her cheeks. "It’s just a spilled cup of coffee! People spill things all the time!"

"When you spill a boiling liquid on a child and then prevent assistance while blaming the victim, it ceases to be an accident," Agent Miller said, sliding a document across the table. "You are being charged under Title 49 of the United States Code, Section 46504—Interference with flight crew members and attendants, alongside federal assault charges involving a minor. These carry a maximum penalty of up to twenty years in a federal penitentiary."

The silence that followed was absolute. Cynthia Vale looked at the document, the gravity of her actions finally crushing her defiance. The world she thought she could bully into compliance had suddenly stood up and said no.
