Chapter 5 - The Grand Belvedere

The transformation began the very next morning.
At 7:00 AM, a black sedan arrived outside Sadie’s apartment building. Two sleek women in designer suits entered her small bedroom, packed her few belongings into leather suitcases, and escorted her to The Grand Belvedere—a breathtaking fifty-story luxury hotel and private club in the heart of Center City.
Her new home was a penthouse suite on the forty-eighth floor, featuring floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the city, marble floors, and a wardrobe filled with thousands of dollars of tailored evening dresses, silk blouses, and Italian heels.
At 2:00 PM, Gabriel walked into her suite without knocking. He was wearing a dark navy suit, his hair neatly styled.
He stopped, taking in the sight of her dressed in a fitted emerald-green silk dress that complemented her eyes and dark auburn hair.
“You look like you belong here,” Gabriel observed quietly.
“I feel like I’m wearing a golden straitjacket,” Sadie replied, adjusting the gold bracelet one of his stylists had placed on her wrist. “What are my actual duties, Gabriel? Or am I just supposed to stand around looking pretty so your enemies don't shoot at you?”
“Tonight is the annual Spring Gala of the Philadelphia Commerce Syndicate,” Gabriel said, stepping closer to inspect her appearance. “Every major figure in the city’s underground and legitimate business sectors will be in the ballroom downstairs. Your job is simple: stay by my side, manage the VIP guest list, and keep your eyes open.”
“Looking for more traitors?” she asked sarcastically.
“Always,” Gabriel replied without a hint of humor. He extended his arm toward her. “Shall we?”
Sadie hesitated for a fraction of a second before placing her hand over his forearm.
The Grand Belvedere’s main ballroom was a glittering sea of tuxedoes, diamond necklaces, and live orchestral music. Wealthy politicians rubbed shoulders with high-ranking mob capos, all drinking champagne under massive crystal chandeliers.
As Gabriel and Sadie descended the grand staircase, the room went subtly quiet. Whispers rippled through the crowd. Dozens of eyes turned to stare at the unknown woman holding the arm of Philadelphia’s most feared crime boss.
“Smile, Sadie,” Gabriel murmured near her ear, his hand sliding down to rest possessively against the small of her back. “They’re trying to figure out if you’re my mistress, my lieutenant, or my weakness.”
May you like
“Which one am I?” she whispered back, maintaining a polite, radiant smile for the onlookers.
“Right now,” Gabriel murmured, his breath warm against her cheek, “you are whatever keeps them afraid of me.”
