PART 3

The line of black vehicles filled the circular driveway.

Men and women in dark business suits stepped out carrying briefcases, sealed document boxes, and laptop cases.

No one spoke.

The only sound was Noah's soft breathing as he slept peacefully against my shoulder beneath Jonathan's coat.

Victoria's confidence finally cracked.

She forced a smile.

"Mr. Harrison, surely we don't need to make this public."

Jonathan didn't answer.

Instead, he looked toward Amelia.

"Begin."

She nodded.

Immediately, two attorneys approached Victoria.

One handed her a formal notice.

The other placed a digital tablet in front of Ethan.

"What is this?" Ethan asked.

"A legal preservation order."

The attorney's voice was calm.

"Effective immediately, all financial records, emails, internal communications, and accounting systems related to Langston Holdings are protected from deletion."

Victoria's face turned pale.

"This is outrageous."

Jonathan finally spoke.

"No."

"What would be outrageous..."

He looked toward me.

"...would be pretending none of this happened."

The Financial Crimes investigators entered the mansion.

Within minutes, employees began carrying boxes from the home office.

Laptops.

External hard drives.

Financial ledgers.

Contract files.

Victoria stepped forward.

"You can't just take those!"

One investigator calmly held up the warrant.

"We can."

She stopped speaking.

Meanwhile...

Jonathan guided me to a nearby garden bench away from the growing chaos.

"Sit down."

"You've been standing too long."

Only then did I realize how exhausted I was.

My body still hadn't recovered from childbirth.

Every movement hurt.

Jonathan noticed immediately.

"When was your last medical appointment?"

I looked down.

"Six weeks ago."

"And since then?"

I hesitated.

"I canceled the others."

"Why?"

I forced a small smile.

"No insurance."

His expression changed.

"Ethan canceled it?"

I nodded silently.

Not because he wanted to.

Because Victoria insisted the company needed to reduce expenses.

Jonathan slowly closed his eyes.

"My daughter..."

His voice was filled with pain.

"...couldn't even see a doctor."

Across the driveway...

Ethan remained frozen.

He watched investigators carry document boxes from his mother's office.

Nothing made sense anymore.

He turned toward Victoria.

"Mom..."

She refused to meet his eyes.

"You told me we were recovering."

"We were."

"You said Harrison Global believed in our turnaround plan."

"They did."

"So why are they saying we're almost bankrupt?"

Victoria snapped.

"Because they're trying to intimidate us."

Just then...

One of the forensic accountants approached Jonathan.

"Sir."

Jonathan looked up.

"What have you found?"

The accountant handed him a thick report.

"There are significant irregularities."

Victoria immediately interrupted.

"Every company has accounting adjustments."

The accountant ignored her.

"Over the past eighteen months..."

He turned several pages.

"...approximately twenty-seven million dollars was transferred to consulting firms."

Jonathan frowned.

"And?"

"They don't exist."

Silence.

The accountant continued.

"They're shell companies."

Every eye turned toward Victoria.

Ethan stared at the report.

"Twenty-seven million?"

His voice cracked.

"Where did it go?"

No one answered.

Finally...

The accountant quietly said,

"Most of the funds eventually arrived in offshore accounts."

Victoria looked furious.

"You have no proof I authorized anything."

The accountant calmly slid another page across the table.

"We do."

It contained digital approval signatures.

Every one belonged to Victoria.

She stopped breathing.

Ethan slowly stepped backward.

"No..."

He whispered.

"You told me investors caused everything."

Victoria looked desperate.

"I was protecting the family."

"By stealing from it?"

"I was protecting you!"

He laughed bitterly.

"You bankrupted my company."

"You lied to me."

"You convinced me my wife didn't understand business."

"You told me she was becoming emotional after the baby."

His voice grew louder.

"And I believed you."

Jonathan quietly walked over.

He didn't interrupt.

He simply watched.

Ethan turned toward him.

"I failed her."

Jonathan nodded once.

"Yes."

"I failed my son."

"Yes."

"I became exactly the husband my father warned me never to become."

Jonathan's expression softened slightly.

"The hardest moment in a person's life..."

He said quietly.

"...is the first honest conversation with themselves."

Just then...

One of the investigators emerged from the study carrying a locked fireproof box.

"We found this hidden behind a false wall."

Victoria's face instantly lost all color.

"No..."

The investigator placed the box on the dining room table.

"Combination?"

Victoria remained silent.

The investigator looked toward Jonathan.

"We can force it open."

Jonathan nodded.

"Do it."

Within seconds...

A portable cutting tool sliced through the lock.

The lid slowly opened.

Inside...

Were dozens of envelopes.

Each carefully labeled.

"Ethan."

"Emergency."

"Do Not Open."

The investigator frowned.

"What are these?"

Jonathan picked up the first envelope.

Inside was a letter.

Written in Ethan's handwriting.

Except...

He had never written it.

The signature had been copied.

The contents claimed he wanted to transfer control of several family assets to Victoria.

Another envelope contained forged board resolutions.

Another...

Forged loan guarantees.

Another...

A draft power of attorney that would have given Victoria complete authority over Ethan's financial affairs.

Ethan stared in disbelief.

"My signature..."

"It's fake."

The forensic document examiner nodded.

"It is."

He looked at Jonathan.

"Every document in this box appears to have been prepared in advance."

Jonathan frowned.

"For what purpose?"

The examiner answered quietly.

"In case Ethan ever became... inconvenient."

A chill spread through the entire room.

Amelia's phone suddenly rang.

She answered.

Listened.

Then looked directly at Jonathan.

"Sir..."

"What is it?"

"The DNA laboratory just called."

My heart stopped.

Jonathan looked at me.

"The expedited results are ready."

Every person in the driveway became completely still.

Amelia swallowed.

Her voice trembled.

"The report confirms..."

She smiled through tears.

"...there is a 99.9999 percent probability..."

She looked directly at me.

"...that Claire is your biological daughter."

Jonathan closed his eyes.

For twenty-two years he had prayed for those words.

Now he finally heard them.

He slowly walked toward me.

Tears streamed freely down his face.

Then he opened his arms.

For the second time that day...

A father held the daughter he had never stopped searching for.

But before anyone could speak...

One of the financial investigators ran out of the mansion holding a laptop.

"Mr. Harrison!"

Jonathan turned.

"What happened?"

The investigator looked grim.

"We found emails sent just this morning."

"From Victoria."

"To a private adoption broker."

The entire courtyard fell silent.

Jonathan frowned.

"Adoption broker?"

The investigator slowly turned the laptop screen around.

The subject line read:

Infant Placement Inquiry — Immediate Transfer Required

Below it...

Attached to the email...

Was a recent photograph of Noah.

My son.

Victoria hadn't just planned to throw us out.

She had already begun making arrangements to take my baby away forever.
