Chapter 3 - The Deconstruction

Recovery was a slow, agonizing process of rebuilding. Julian didn't just provide medical care; he provided the strategy. He brought in legal counsel—the kind of firm that charged by the minute and whose reputation was built on burying opponents in mountains of discovery.

Harrison, meanwhile, was experiencing his own version of hell.

Without me, he was failing. He had spent years relying on my quiet management, my ability to smooth over the rough edges of his corporate empire, and the leverage provided by the Caldwell family name. With me gone, the veneer began to crack.

I sat in my room, following the developments through Julian’s tablet. Vivien Sterling was proving to be a liability. She was overreaching, making aggressive, illegal moves to consolidate power, thinking she could fill the void I left.

"He's panicking," Julian said, watching me eat a piece of toast. "He tried to contact me three times today. He thinks he can talk his way out of this with a 'charity donation' to the hospital."

"Let him try," I said, my hand resting on my stomach. The baby kicked, a soft, reassuring thud. "He doesn't know you're my uncle yet, does he?"

"No," Julian smiled, a cold, calculating look. "He thinks you were rescued by a random staff member. He’s about to find out exactly how deep the water is."

The next day, Harrison arrived at the hospital. He was disheveled, his expensive suit wrinkled. He looked like a man who had been running on fumes. He demanded to see me.

Julian met him in the lobby.

I watched via a security feed Julian had authorized. Julian looked like a god among men compared to the frantic, sweating Harrison.

"I demand to see my wife!" Harrison shouted, attracting the attention of the patients in the waiting room.

"Your wife?" Julian asked, his voice dripping with refined, icy contempt. "You have no wife, Harrison. You have a victim. And you have a mountain of litigation coming your way that will make your bankruptcy look like a minor accounting error."

"Who the hell are you?" Harrison spat.

"I am the man who is going to take your company, your board seat, and your freedom," Julian said, stepping closer. "And when you lose everything, I want you to remember that it was the woman you called 'fragile' who held the keys to your destruction."

Harrison looked like he had been struck. He didn't understand the depth of the trap. He thought this was about a divorce. He had no idea it was about a legacy.
