Chapter 10 - The Unshakable Crown

One year later, the autumn leaves were falling across the North New Jersey hills once more, turning the sprawling lawns of the Moretti estate into a sea of brilliant gold and crimson.
Inside the grand library, the fire crackled warmly in the massive stone hearth.
Arthur Finch stood by the window, reviewing a stack of international shipping manifests for the new Baltimore terminals, while across the room, sitting behind the large walnut desk that had once belonged to Dante’s father, sat Nora Moretti.
She wore a sharp, tailored charcoal suit, her hair styled with effortless elegance, her fingers turning the pages of a high-level financial ledger with the practiced, flawless precision of a master auditor who owned every single decimal point in the syndicate’s vast corporate empire.
The heavy double doors swung open without a knock.
Dante walked into the library. He was older, his hair dusted with silver at the temples, but his posture was as straight as a soldier’s, his presence filling the room with that heavy, undeniable gravity that commanded an entire East Coast empire.
He walked straight to the desk, placing a single crystal glass of spring water with a slice of lemon beside her paperwork—the exact same ritual he had maintained every single day since she took her place beside him.
Nora looked up, smiling softly as she marked a final checkmark with her pen.
“The quarterly operational audit for the real estate and shipping divisions is complete,” Nora said, closing the ledger with a soft, satisfying thump. “Every account is balanced, every asset is verified, and the federal compliance filings were approved by the DOJ this morning without a single objection.”
Dante pulled up a chair beside her desk, sitting down with a quiet, contented sigh as he looked out the tall leaded windows toward the sunlit gardens.
“You know,” Dante murmured, his deep voice carrying a quiet warmth, “three years ago, you walked into an underground club with forty-two dollars, a dead phone, and nowhere safe to sleep.”
“And today,” Nora said, turning her hand over so the heavy platinum signet ring caught the firelight, “I own the roof over my head, the books we audit, and the man sitting beside me.”
Arthur Finch looked up from his shipping manifests across the room, a rare, genuine smile touching his hard mouth.
“She’s right, boss,” Arthur said, closing his folder with a solid thud. “The empire has never been safer.”

Dante turned his dark, obsidian eyes back to Nora, watching the way the firelight danced in her eyes—the terrified girl who had dropped onto his lap to escape her past, and had ended up becoming the unshakable queen of his entire world.
“Let the world outside try whatever it wants,” Dante Moretti said softly, raising his glass in a quiet toast to the woman who completed his life. “The crown doesn't slip.”
