Chapter 1 - THE MARBLE HALL OF SHADOWS

The grand entryway of the Montgomery estate was a masterpiece of cold, unforgiving luxury. Imported Italian marble stretched across thousands of square feet, polished to such an extreme mirror shine that every glittering crystal of the massive chandelier above was reflected in the floor below. High ceilings vaulted up into hand-painted frescoes of Roman deities, and priceless oil paintings framed in heavy gilded wood lined the walls.

Yet, despite the warmth of the roaring marble fireplaces and the soft glow of golden wall sconces, the atmosphere inside 1000 Royal Oaks Drive was routinely colder than an arctic winter.

The temperature in the mansion was governed not by thermostats, but by the volatile temper of its mistress: Laura Montgomery.

At fifty-four years old, Laura was the undisputed sovereign of Texas high society and the matriarch of the billion-dollar Montgomery Oil & Logistics Conglomerate. She walked with the sharp, rhythmic snap of three-inch designer heels against marble—a sound that sent immediate shockwaves of anxiety through every butler, cook, housekeeper, and gardener on the estate’s thirty-acre grounds. To work for Laura Montgomery was to walk a tightrope stretched over a pit of absolute ruin.

On a crisp Tuesday morning, that tightrope snapped.

"You incompetent, worthless little brat!"

Laura’s screech shattered the silent air of the grand foyer like a hurled crystal vase hitting concrete.

Every staff member within earshot froze instantly. In the secondary dining hall, the silver polishers stopped their cloths mid-motion. In the kitchen, the executive chef paused his knife over a cutting board, his jaw set in a hard, grim line. In the central hallway, two footmen instinctively backed into the shadows of a recessed archway, dropping their heads and fixing their eyes strictly on the floor.

No one stepped forward. No one ever stepped forward when Laura Montgomery went into a rage.

In the center of the grand rotunda, Laura had her manicured hand locked firmly around the upper arm of a young maid. The woman, who had been hired through a third-party domestic agency only three weeks prior, was wearing the mandatory navy-blue linen uniform of the Montgomery household staff.

With a sharp, vicious jerk of her arm, Laura dragged the young woman across the slick marble floor.

"Look at this!" Laura screamed, her sharp features twisted into a mask of pure disgust as she pointed her free hand toward an antique French side table. "An eighteen-century mahogany console, imported from Paris, covered in a film of dust! I pay your agency four thousand dollars a month to keep this house immaculate, and you bring your filthy, lazy hands into my home?!"

"Ma'am, please," the girl gasped, trying to gain her footing on the slippery stone floor. "I dusted that gallery less than twenty minutes ago—the contractors left the balcony doors open—"

"Silence!" Laura roared.

She shoved the girl backward with stunning, cruel force.

The maid’s rubber-soled work shoes slipped out from under her, and she hit the marble floor hard on her knees with a sickening thud. The impact jolted through her frame. Her silver dust tray clattered across the floor, spinning violently before coming to a stop near the base of the grand staircase.

The young woman gasped in pain, her body trembling as her hands hit the hard stone to catch herself.

Laura stood over her, towering like a tyrant atop a mountain of unearned gold. She was impeccably dressed in a tailored cream-colored silk suit, her silver-blond hair swept up into an immaculate twist. Her diamond ring—a fourteen-carat emerald-cut rock—glinted mercilessly under the chandelier light.

"Look at you," Laura spat, stepping closer until the polished leather toe of her shoe was inches from the girl’s trembling knee. "You came into this house looking like a beggar from the gutters, and that is exactly where you belong. You think because you wear a uniform you get to breathe the same air as me? You are a pathetic little nobody."

A thin trickling line of dark crimson blood began to bead at the corner of the young maid’s lower lip where she had struck the marble edge of a planter during the fall. A long strand of dark, wavy hair clung to her pale, cheekbone-defined cheek.

The other servants watched in horror from the far corridors, their fingers clenching into fists behind their backs, but terror held them firmly in place. Over the years, Laura had ruined lives for far less. She had blacklisted housekeepers, had security guards falsely arrest chauffeurs, and destroyed the reputations of junior board members who dared interrupt her during meetings.

The girl on the floor took a slow, painful breath.

She wiped the blood from her lip with the back of her trembling hand.

Then, she did something that caused the air in the room to freeze entirely.

She didn't cry. She didn't bow her head. She didn't beg for forgiveness or plead for her job.

Instead, the young maid lifted her head, looked straight up into the cold, calculated eyes of Laura Montgomery, and smiled.

It wasn't a smile of fear or insanity. It was a smile of pure, unwavering, bone-chilling defiance.

Her eyes—a striking, uncommon shade of deep amber gold—locked onto Laura’s pale blue ones with an intensity that caused the older woman to involuntarily take a half-step backward.

"You think money gives you the right to be cruel," the girl said. Her voice was low, rasping slightly from the pain in her chest, but it sliced through the dead silence of the grand foyer like a scalpel through silk. "You think this marble, these paintings, and your billions make you untouchable. But what I am about to reveal today is going to leave you completely powerless."

Laura stared at her, stunned into silence for half a heartbeat.

The room went so still that the gentle ticking of the grandfather clock thirty feet away sounded like the striking of an anvil.

Laura straightened up slowly, her shoulders stiffening under her silk jacket. She let out a thin, sharp, icy laugh that held no genuine humor.

"You?" Laura said, her tone dripping with absolute contempt as she looked down her nose at the bleeding girl. "Threaten me? You are a nameless, replaceable servant who will be thrown out onto the driveway by security in five minutes. You have absolutely nothing."

"I have everything that matters," the girl replied, slowly pushing herself up off the floor. Her knees shook slightly, but her stance remained firm, rooted to the marble like a tree built to withstand a hurricane. "And by the time the sun sets today, Laura Montgomery, you will realize that you have spent twenty years ruling over a kingdom of ashes."

May you like

Laura’s breath hitched in her throat. Something in the girl’s voice—a peculiar, melodic cadence, an underlying edge of authority—struck a long-forgotten cord deep within her chest.

For a fleeting second, the grand hall vanished, replaced by the ghost of a memory Laura had spent two decades trying to drown in vodka, power, and cash.
