Chapter 5 - The Shield and the Future

A single tear rolled down Della’s cheek as she stared at the man sitting beside her bed.

Seven years ago, he had been a ragged, bleeding youth with eyes full of desperate violence and pain. Now, he was a towering figure of immense wealth, power, and authority. But as she looked deep into his pale gray eyes, she recognized the same fierce, unwavering soul she had protected in the dark all those years ago.

"It was you," Della repeated, a weak, stunned laughter escaping her lips. "I... I thought about you for months after that night. I wondered if you survived. I checked the local newspapers for weeks, terrified I would read that they found your body..."

"I survived because of you, Della," Royce said softly. He didn't pull his hand away. He held her soft, cold fingers securely in his large, warm palm. "I searched for you for seven years. I sent my men to every district, every apartment, every diner. But you vanished."

"My mother got sick a month after that night," Della explained quietly, her eyes dropping to the blanket. "I had to give up the apartment, sell everything we owned, and move to the north side to care for her until she passed away. After that... I was completely alone. I took whatever jobs I could find to survive."

Royce felt a sharp, bitter knot tighten in his chest. While he had been building his multi-million dollar empire, living in luxury penthouses and commanding hundreds of men, the woman who had saved his life had been struggling in poverty, working grueling shifts as a banquet waitress just to buy food.

"You will never be alone again, Della," Royce said. The promise was quiet, but it held the absolute weight of a sworn oath. "And you will never have to work another day in your life if you do not wish to."

Della looked at him, shaking her head gently. "Mr. Calloway... Royce... you don't owe me anything. What I did seven years ago was just what any human being should do. I didn't save you for a reward."

"I know," Royce replied, a faint, rare smile touching the corners of his lips. "That is precisely why you deserve everything."

Before Della could argue, a quiet knock sounded at the hospital door.

Viktor, Royce’s chief lieutenant, stepped into the room. He was a broad-shouldered man in a dark suit, carrying a sleek leather briefcase. He bowed respectfully toward Royce and gave Della a polite, gentle nod.

"Boss," Viktor said in a low tone. "The police precinct has finalized the charges against Cordelia Vance. Chief Marcus attempted to delay the filing, but after I delivered the security footage and the federal audit files to the district attorney, her bail was denied. She is currently sitting in a holding cell at the central jail awaiting formal arraignment."

Della looked stunned. "She... she was arrested?"

"She assaulted a pregnant woman," Royce said coldly, turning to Viktor. "What about Harlan Vance?"

"His family's logistics firm filed for emergency bankruptcy an hour ago," Viktor reported smoothly. "Their primary creditors panicked when news of your contract cancellation leaked to the financial press. They recalled all outstanding loans. The Vance family assets are currently being seized by the state receivership. By tomorrow afternoon, the Vance family will be entirely destitute."

Della listened to the report in sheer amazement. In less than three hours, the arrogant, wealthy couple who had treated her like garbage had been completely stripped of their power, wealth, and freedom.

"Is... is all of this because of what happened to me?" Della asked softly, looking at Royce with wide eyes.

"It is because they believed their money made them invincible," Royce replied, turning back to her. "They believed they could hurt you without consequences because you were wearing a waitress uniform. I simply reminded them of how fragile their world really is."

Viktor opened his leather briefcase and pulled out a thick document encased in a dark leather folder, placing it gently on the bedside table.

"What is this?" Della asked.

"This is the deed to a private estate in the executive hills," Royce explained calmly. "It includes a fully staffed residence, a private security team, and an open trust fund established in your unborn child's name. The fund contains twenty million dollars, managed by the city's top financial conservators. It will cover your child's education, healthcare, and future for the rest of their life."

Della stared at the folder as if it were on fire. "No... no, Royce, I can't accept this! This is millions of dollars! I can't take your money!"

"It is not a gift, Della," Royce said gently, taking her hand again and wrapping both of his hands around hers. "It is a debt seven years overdue. You risked your life to shield a dying stranger in a dark alley. You took a blade for me and never asked for a single penny. You gave me my life, my empire, and my future."

He looked down at her pregnant belly, his eyes filled with a fierce, protective warmth.

"Now, it is my turn to shield you."

Della looked at the deed, then at the powerful man kneeling by her bedside. For months, she had been drowning in anxiety—worrying about rent, worrying about buying diapers, worrying about how she would raise a child alone in a cold, unforgiving city on a waitress's wage.

Now, in a single night, the storm had cleared. The fear that had weighed down her heart for five long months lifted, replaced by a deep, overwhelming sense of peace and safety.

"Thank you..." Della choked out, fresh tears flowing down her cheeks. But this time, she was smiling. "Thank you, Royce."

"Rest now, Della," Royce whispered, leaning forward and placing a soft, gentle kiss on the back of her hand, right over the pale crescent scar. "I will be right outside the door. No one will ever hurt you again."

Outside the hospital room, the night was clear and quiet.

Royce stood by the large glass window of the VIP corridor, looking out over the glittering lights of the city skyline. The city below was vast, loud, and full of dangerous shadows, but up here, on the top floor of the medical center, everything was calm.

Viktor stepped up beside him, holding an encrypted satellite phone.

"Boss," Viktor said quietly. "The media outlets are requesting an official statement regarding the incident at the Ashworth Grand. The Vance family’s lawyers are begging for a private meeting with you tomorrow morning to negotiate a settlement."

Royce didn't look away from the window. He took a slow, deep breath, feeling the steady rhythm of his own heart—a heart that was still beating only because a gentle girl had locked a door seven years ago.

"Tell the press that the Ashworth Grand Hotel enforces a policy of absolute protection for its staff and guests," Royce said softly, his voice carrying the calm, absolute authority of a king. "And tell the Vance family’s lawyers that if they ever speak Della Marsh’s name again, I will buy their law firm and burn it to the ground."

Viktor nodded smoothly. "Understood, boss."

Royce turned his head, looking back through the small glass window of the hospital room door. Inside, Della had fallen into a deep, peaceful sleep, her face serene, her hand resting safely over her unborn child.
