Chapter 3 - The Father's Blueprint

The records room was pitch black, saved only by the narrow beam of my tactical flashlight cutting through suspended dust particles. Overhead, the metal ductwork groaned under weight.

I raised my weapon, tracking the movement above.

A metal screw popped loose from the ceiling vent, clattering onto a metal filing cabinet below. Then another. The grate was being removed from the inside.

"Marcus Vance!" I called out, positioning myself behind a heavy steel desk. "You are entering a law enforcement facility. I am armed. Stop where you are and lay down on the floor!"

A soft, metallic clicking sound came from inside the ductwork, followed by the dry, raspy laugh I had heard over the PA system.

"You don't understand the geography of this building, Officer," Vance's voice echoed through the metal vent. "You think you are standing in a police station. You are standing inside an enclosure designed specifically to contain high-risk bio-hazardous material. When I updated this precinct's protocols for the city, I included a quarantine contingency. Do you know what happens when containment fails?"

"You poisoned your own daughter," I said, keeping my firearm aligned with the dark opening above the filing cabinet. "She needs immediate medical attention. If you care about her survival, step out with your hands empty."

"She is not poisoned!" Vance snapped, his tone shifting from cold detachment to sharp, volatile anger. "She is preserved! The compound in that syringe is a stabilization vector! It locks cellular degradation in the event of nerve agent exposure. But it has a critical half-life. Without the counter-agent, the binder crystallizes in the bloodstream!"

My stomach dropped. Crystallizes. That explained Olivia's severe abdominal pain and rapid drop in blood pressure. The drug was solidifying within her vascular system.

"Where is the counter-agent?" I demanded.

"In my pocket," Vance replied. "Where it will stay until you hand over the twin who ran. Emma carried the master sequence in her shoe. The syringe wasn't empty when she took it, Officer. It contained the baseline reference code. I need both girls to complete the transfer before the corporate recovery team arrives."

Before I could process his words, a thick canister tumbled out of the open duct, landing on the linoleum floor with a sharp metallic clatter.

Pop-ssssssss.

Dense white smoke erupted from the canister, expanding rapidly into the room. My eyes began to burn instantly, a sharp chemical sting scorching my throat. Tear gas—or worse.

I dropped low, coughing violently, and fired two shots toward the ceiling vent before retreating backward into the lobby corridor, slamming the reinforced fire door behind me to seal off the gas.

I stumbled back to the duty desk, gasping for fresh air, my vision blurs with tears. Emma was crouching over Olivia, clutching her sister's hand.

May you like

"Officer?" Emma cried out, her eyes wide with terror. "Is Daddy here?"

"We have to move," I croaked, wiping my eyes with the sleeve of my uniform. "Now."
