Part 4: Voices Behind Closed Doors

Victoria slowly lowered herself onto the sofa.

For several seconds, no one spoke.

The hotel suite was silent except for the soft hum of the air conditioner and the distant traffic below.

Rebecca rested one hand on the laptop.

"Are you ready?"

Victoria wasn't.

But she nodded anyway.

"Play it."

Rebecca clicked the file.

Static filled the room once more.

Then Marcus's familiar voice emerged.

"Begin recording."

There was the sound of a chair scraping across the hardwood floor.

A glass being set on a table.

Then Victoria heard herself laugh.

A genuine laugh.

One she hadn't heard in years.

She remembered the evening immediately.

It had been their twelfth wedding anniversary.

Marcus had surprised her with dinner at home.

Candles.

Wine.

Music.

She had believed it was one of the happiest nights of their marriage.

Now she realized someone had secretly recorded every second of it.

"You've been working too hard," Marcus said in the recording.

Victoria answered warmly.

"I'm trying to keep up with you."

"You never have to compete with me."

"I know."

Listening to herself broke her heart.

She had sounded happy.

She had trusted him completely.

Rebecca stopped the recording.

"Do you remember where this happened?"

"Our dining room."

"Were you aware you were being recorded?"

"No."

"Never."

Rebecca wrote another note.

"This may be important."

They opened a second file.

This one was dated nearly three years later.

The voices were different.

Marcus sounded impatient.

Victoria sounded exhausted.

"I have another doctor's appointment tomorrow," she said in the recording.

"I'll cancel my afternoon meetings."

Marcus answered without emotion.

"No."

"You'll reschedule."

"I've already postponed twice."

"My meetings come first."

The recording ended.

Victoria stared at the screen.

"I remember that."

"What happened?"

"I drove myself."

Rebecca quietly saved the file into an evidence folder.

File after file revealed small moments of married life.

Arguments.

Financial discussions.

Conversations with lawyers.

Holiday dinners.

Private phone calls.

Every one of them secretly preserved.

The realization settled heavily over the room.

Marcus hadn't simply controlled people.

He had documented them.

Eleanor rubbed her temples.

"This wasn't about memories."

Rebecca agreed.

"It feels organized."

"Systematic."

Victoria looked toward the laptop.

"Why?"

Rebecca answered carefully.

"We don't know."

"It would be speculation."

"But whatever his reason..."

"...he kept these recordings for years."

Then they opened another folder.

Its title read:

OFFICE

Inside were dozens of additional recordings.

Conference rooms.

Private meetings.

Executive discussions.

Some appeared to involve ordinary business conversations.

Others were clearly marked as confidential.

Rebecca immediately closed the folder.

"We need to be careful."

"Why?"

"Some recordings may involve privileged or confidential communications."

"We shouldn't assume anything until they're reviewed properly."

Victoria nodded.

As an attorney, she understood.

Evidence had to be handled correctly.

Otherwise it might never be usable.

The final folder was different.

It contained only three files.

No dates.

No descriptions.

Just numbers.

Rebecca opened the first.

Marcus's voice filled the room.

"You understand the arrangement?"

Another male voice answered.

"Yes."

"We'll use the consulting agreements."

"The funds won't move directly."

There was a pause.

Then Marcus replied.

"Good."

"Keep everything layered."

Rebecca immediately stopped the recording.

No one spoke.

Victoria finally broke the silence.

"What does that mean?"

Rebecca chose her words carefully.

"I don't know."

"Not yet."

"But conversations like that deserve closer examination."

The second recording contained only a brief exchange.

Marcus again.

Another unidentified voice.

References to multiple companies.

Transfers.

Invoices.

Nothing conclusive.

But enough to raise questions.

Rebecca exported the file.

"We'll preserve everything."

The third recording never finished.

After only thirty seconds, someone entered the room.

A woman gasped.

Marcus immediately said,

"Turn that off."

The recording ended.

Victoria looked at the screen.

"Who was she?"

"I can't tell," Rebecca admitted.

A sudden vibration interrupted them.

Victoria's phone.

Unknown number again.

She hesitated.

Rebecca nodded.

"Put it on speaker."

Victoria answered.

"Hello?"

Heavy breathing.

Then Amber spoke quietly.

"I don't have much time."

"Marcus knows something is missing."

Victoria sat upright.

"The flash drive?"

"Yes."

"Was that you?"

"Yes."

"I left it with hotel security."

Victoria glanced at Rebecca.

"Thank you."

Amber's voice shook.

"I found something else."

"What?"

"There are storage units."

Rebecca immediately picked up her pen.

"Where?"

"I don't know all the locations."

"But I copied one address."

She quickly read it aloud.

Rebecca wrote every word.

Amber continued.

"I think he keeps paper files there."

"What kind of files?" Victoria asked.

"I don't know."

"I never opened the boxes."

"But he visits every month."

Before anyone could ask another question—

A man's voice sounded faintly in the background.

"Amber?"

Her breathing stopped.

"Oh no."

The call disconnected.

Silence returned.

Victoria stared at the blank phone screen.

"I hope she's safe."

Eleanor nodded.

"So do I."

Rebecca closed the laptop.

"We've learned enough for one night."

Victoria looked at the growing stack of folders.

The trust documents.

The financial records.

The recordings.

The anonymous flash drive.

Hours earlier, she had believed Marcus had simply ended their marriage.

Now she was beginning to understand that their divorce might uncover questions far larger than either of them had imagined.

She gently rested both hands on her stomach.

James kicked softly.

"I promise you," she whispered.

"No matter how long this takes..."

"I'm going to build you a life where the truth never has to hide behind locked doors."

Outside the hotel window, thunder rolled across the Atlanta skyline.

Somewhere in the city, Marcus Sterling was searching for the missing flash drive.

He had no idea that the people he trusted least—

his wife,

his mother,

and the woman he thought he controlled—

were now working together.

And by morning, Rebecca intended to find out exactly what was hidden inside the storage unit Amber had described.
