Chapter 4 - The Discovery at 9:00 AM

The silver Buick sedan pulled into the circular driveway of the Scottsdale property at precisely 8:54 AM on Saturday morning.

Eleanor Cole stepped out of the vehicle, her designer sunglasses adjusted perfectly to shield her eyes from the morning glare. She was a woman of fastidious discipline, her silver hair styled into an immovable bob, her designer handbag clutched securely in her leather-gloved hand. She had spent her life cultivating an aura of unflappable aristocratic composure, and she fully expected her daughter-in-law to have the house presented in a clean, organized state for her arrival.

She walked up the stone steps to the porch, selected her copy of the house key from her ring, and inserted it into the heavy iron lock. The deadbolt slid back with a smooth, mechanical click.

"Claire?" Eleanor called out as she stepped into the grand foyer, her voice carrying a sharp, critical inflection. "I’m here. I hope the kitchen has been cleared from last night. Ethan mentioned you were having some... emotional adjustments to the routine."

There was no verbal response from the interior.

Instead, Eleanor’s nostrils were immediately assaulted by a dense, heavy, and metallic odor—the unmistakable, visceral scent of unoxygenated blood that had been drying under the desert heat for fourteen hours. It smelled like a slaughterhouse hidden behind the pristine drywall of a multi-million-dollar suburban villa.

Eleanor took three steps forward, her leather shoes clicking against the travertine tiles, before her gaze landed on the main hallway leading to the kitchen.

The floor was gone. In its place was a vast, sprawling, and dried lake of dark, brownish-black fluid that had pooled in the grout lines and warped the baseboards. A wide, smeared track ran through the center of the crimson field, showing the distinct marks of a human body dragging itself through the waste toward the kitchen island. The phone lay in the center of the floor, its screen still illuminated with a series of missed notifications from corporate apps, covered in a dried, crusty glaze.

Eleanor’s purse slipped from her fingers, hitting the stone floor with a dull thud as her face drained of all color, her aristocratic composure collapsing into a mask of pure, unadulterated primal horror.

"Oh my God," she gasped, her hands flying to her throat as she stepped back toward the door, her shoes tracking sticky red footprints onto the pristine foyer tiles. "Ethan... what did you do?"

Before she could process the physical landscape, a shadow fell over the front doorway.

Dr. Thomas Vance stepped through the threshold, accompanied by two uniformed detectives from the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Department. Thomas was still wearing his blue hospital scrubs, his face a hard, frozen mask of absolute lethal focus. He looked at Eleanor, his gray eyes burning with an intensity that made the older woman instinctively cower against the wall.

"Your son isn't here, Eleanor," Thomas said, his voice dropping into a low, terrifyingly calm register that carried the weight of an executioner's axe. "He left my sister to bleed to death on this floor so he could celebrate his thirtieth birthday in Sedona. We found her last night with a blood volume of less than two liters. She survived the emergency hysterectomy by forty-five seconds."

He stepped over the dried lake of fluid, pointing a single, gloved finger toward the back hallway. "The detectives are here to document the scene. And then, we are going to deliver the bill for his birthday weekend."
