Chapter 2 - The Midnight Scream

At 11:42 PM, the automatic iron gates at the end of the long driveway hummed open. Nora watched from behind the dark wood shutters of the study as Edgar’s white Mercedes-Benz sedan pulled into the motor court.
Edgar stepped out. He was a handsome man of thirty-eight, with tailored shirts, soft hands, and a slightly soft jawline that Nora had once found endearing. He looked flushed, his silk tie loosened at the collar, humming a low tune under his breath as he hit the remote lock button.
Nora heard the front door chime.
She heard Kristina’s rushed, frantic whispers in the foyer, though she could not make out the exact words over the quiet hum of the air conditioning.
"Where is she?" Edgar’s voice floated down the hall, slightly slurred, tinged with mild annoyance. "She didn't answer her cell... Ah, whatever. I’m exhausted, Ma. We’ll talk about the audit tomorrow."
Heavy footfalls mounted the grand staircase.
Nora remained seated in the pitch-black study, her eyes fixed on the illuminated clock on her laptop screen.
11:48 PM. 11:51 PM. 11:53 PM.
Then, at precisely 11:57 PM, a noise shattered the quiet night.
It was not a roar or a shout. It was a high-pitched, wet, curdling shriek of absolute, primal agony that ripped through the upper floor, echoed down the double-height entrance hall, and rattled the glass fixtures in the chandelier.
Thud.
A heavy body slammed against the drywall, followed by the sound of furniture overturning—a bedside lamp shattering against hardwood, sheet silk ripping, and then a chaotic, desperate tumbling down the stairs.
Nora stood up, unbolted the study door, and stepped into the hallway.
Kristina was already at the bottom of the staircase, screaming hysterically, her hands clutching her gray curls as she cowered near the marble floor.
Edgar was rolling at the base of the stairs, clutching his left thigh. His face was slick with cold sweat, his eyes bloodshot and wide with unadulterated terror. Pulled tight against the meat of his leg, through his thin trousers, were two distinct, dark red puncture marks surrounded by a rapidly swelling, purplish ring of dead tissue.
"A snake!" Edgar howled, his voice breaking into a ragged sob as he thrashing against the floor. "There’s a massive fucking snake in the bed! It bit me! It bit my leg!"
"Edgar! Oh God, my baby!" Kristina shrieked, dropping to her knees beside him. "Call 911! Nora, call an ambulance!"
Nora walked slowly across the foyer. She stood over her husband, her face completely void of expression.
"A snake?" Nora asked, her voice calm, almost conversational. "In our bed?"
"Under the sheets!" Edgar choked out, gasping for air as his blood pressure plunged. His breathing was turning ragged, a thick sheen of cold perspiration coating his forehead. "It was under the comforter... I slid my legs in and... Christ, it hurts! It feels like hot iron!"
"How strange," Nora said quietly, looking down at Kristina, whose face was completely gray, her mouth hanging open in horrified, frozen panic. "The doors were locked all afternoon, Kristina. How could a six-foot pit viper get past security, walk up twenty marble steps, open our master suite door, and tuck itself neatly under the duvet?"
Kristina’s eyes met Nora’s. In that single, frozen second, the older woman realized two things: Nora knew everything, and Nora had deliberately stepped aside to let the trap spring on the wrong target.
"You..." Kristina stammered, her voice shaking violently. "You knew..."
"Knew what, Kristina?" Nora asked softly, taking out her phone and dialing three numbers.
She placed the phone on speaker.
"911 emergency services, what is your location?" the dispatcher’s voice barked over the small speaker.
"My name is Nora Preston," she said clearly. "I am at 4410 East Cameldale Way, Paradise Valley. My husband has just suffered a severe rattlesnake bite to the upper thigh. We need a paramedic unit with neurotoxic crotalid antivenom immediately."
"Unit dispatched, ma'am. Is the patient breathing?"
"He is breathing, but his blood pressure is dropping," Nora replied, looking down at Edgar, whose lips were beginning to turn a faint, cyanotic blue. "Please hurry."
As Edgar moaned on the floor, weeping and clutching his mother’s apron, Nora stepped over his legs and walked back toward the study.
"Where are you going?!" Kristina screamed after her, her voice shrill with desperation and mounting terror. "He’s dying, Nora! Help him!"

Nora paused at the threshold, looking back over her shoulder.
"I’m going to check my email," Nora said. "And then I’m going to find out who Heather Perkinson is."
