Chapter 10 - The Warmth of the Hearth

Spring arrived late in Chicago that year, melting the heavy lake ice and bringing green shoots to the vast gardens of the North Shore estate.

On a bright, clear Saturday afternoon, the back lawn of the manor was filled with the sound of laughter, music, and children running through the grass.

Daniel had hosted a spring gathering for the entire domestic staff, their families, Detective Renata Cole, and the medical team from St. Catherine’s who had cared for Elena during her recovery. Long tables draped in crisp white linen were set up beneath the oak trees, loaded with food, flowers, and family photos.

At the edge of the terrace, Daniel stood with his hands in his pockets, watching the scene before him.

Marcus walked up beside him, holding an iPad with the afternoon corporate briefs. "The final court proceedings against Victoria Lane were concluded this morning, Mr. Castellan. She received twenty-five years in federal prison without parole. Her father received fifteen."

Daniel stared out over the sunlit lawn where Elena was showing a small girl how to plant yellow tulips in the garden bed.

"Thank you, Marcus," Daniel said quietly. "Close the files. I don't want to hear those names in this house ever again."

"Understood, sir," Marcus bowed his head respectfully and walked back toward the main house.

Daniel walked down the stone terrace steps and crossed the green grass toward the garden bed.

As he approached, Elena looked up, wiping her soil-stained hands on a towel, a bright, beautiful smile lighting up her face in the warm spring sunshine.

"You're going to ruin those shoes if you come into the dirt, Daniel," she warned, her dark eyes sparkling with humor.

"Let them get dirty," Daniel smiled, dropping to his knees in the rich black earth beside her, picking up a small hand trowel. "Show me where the tulips go."

Elena handed him a small green bulb, her warm, steady hand covering his as they pressed the bulb deep into the earth together.

The sun beat down warmly against their backs. The cold air of the past, the dark cellar in Kankakee, the lies, the fear, and the years of silence had vanished into the blue sky over Lake Michigan like winter mist before the morning sun.

For thirty years, Elena Ruiz had held the light for a lonely boy in a grand house.

And now, standing together in the quiet sunlight of their home, the light belonged to them both—unbroken, unshadowed, and forever safe.
