Chapter 2 - The Audit of the Master

The word hung in the air like heavy smoke.

Camille’s artificial smile faltered, her painted lips parting in utter disbelief. "Julian? What are you talking about? She was caught coming out of my dressing room! The bracelet is gone!"

Julian did not answer her immediately. He slowly slid the small velvet box into his inner coat pocket. He turned his head toward the side entrance of the ballroom, where the hotel’s general manager, a sweat-drenched man named Mr. Henderson, was currently hovering in absolute terror.

"Henderson," Julian called out.

The manager practically sprinted across the floor, his polished shoes squeaking against the marble. "Yes, Mr. Cross! Immediately, sir! We can have the staff member removed quietly through the service elevator—"

"Bring me the master access log for Suite 704 for the last three hours," Julian interrupted calmly. "And call down to the chief of engineering. I want the unedited direct video feed from corridor seven pulled up on the primary display in the private dining room in five minutes."

Camille gasped, taking a sharp step forward, her hand reaching out to touch Julian's arm. "Julian, this is completely unnecessary! You are humiliating us in front of the board members! It’s a simple maid staff issue. Let security handle her in the back room so we can return to our engagement announcement!"

Julian looked down at Camille’s hand resting on his sleeve.

He did not pull away violently. He simply stood motionless until Camille, unnerved by the total absence of warmth in his frame, slowly withdrew her fingers.

"An engagement announcement built on an unverified felony in my hotel is bad for business, Camille," Julian said, his voice entirely devoid of emotion. "We will clear this now."

He turned to face Elena again.

"Miss Torres," Julian said softly. "Follow me."

Elena looked into his hazel eyes. She saw no pity in them—only a deep, quiet, and dangerous clarity that she recognized from a time long before tonight. She inclined her head once, keeping her spine straight, and walked beside him toward the mahogany double doors of the private dining suite.

Camille stood frozen for two seconds before cursing under her breath in French, gathering her silk train, and marching after them, followed by her personal security guard and Manager Henderson.

The private dining room was a soundproofed chamber lined with dark walnut paneling, expensive oil paintings, and a massive thirty-inch high-definition monitor set into the wall.

Henderson frantically tapped at a tablet, connecting the hotel's encrypted security network to the wall display.

"I... I have the raw file from the corridor camera, Mr. Cross," Henderson stammered, his forehead glistening under the soft LED lights. "Camera 7B, mounted directly above the east elevator bank, facing the door of Suite 704."

"Play it," Julian commanded, sitting in the central leather chair at the mahogany conference table.

Elena stood three feet to his right, her hands folded neutrally behind her back. Camille stood by the door, her arms crossed tightly over her chest, her foot tapping a sharp, nervous rhythm against the carpet.

The wall monitor flickered to life.

The timestamp in the lower right corner read 19:14:02.

On the screen, the carpeted corridor of the seventh floor was empty.

At 19:15:30, Elena appeared on screen carrying a linen basket. She stopped outside Suite 704. A uniformed hotel security guard tapped his keycard, opened the door, and allowed her to step inside.

"You see!" Camille interjected instantly, pointing at the screen. "She went inside alone! She was in there for six minutes!"

"Keep watching," Julian said coldly.

On the video, forty seconds after Elena entered the room, a second figure walked down the corridor.

It was a woman wearing a floor-length fur coat and a wide-brimmed black hat. She did not knock. She pulled a brass keycard from her designer purse, swiped it smoothly through the electronic lock, and opened the door.

The camera captured her face for a split second as she turned to close the door behind her.

It was Camille’s personal secretary, Chloe.

Three minutes later, at 19:19:12, Chloe emerged from the suite. Her fur coat was pulled tight around her body, and her left hand was shoved deep into her coat pocket, clutching a small, heavy object that created a distinct bulge in the fabric.

She walked quickly toward the service stairs, entirely ignoring the main elevators.

At 19:21:05, Elena emerged from the room holding only the square velvet earring box, walking at a normal pace toward the main elevators.

The room fell into a quiet, suffocating stillness.

Manager Henderson swallowed hard, his eyes darting frantically between the screen and Camille Laurent.

Julian slowly turned his head to look at his fiancée.

"Your secretary, Chloe, used a master duplicate card to enter the suite while Miss Torres was inside the bathroom retrieving your studs," Julian said, his voice dropping into a register that made the air in the room feel heavy. "Chloe took the sapphire bracelet from your jewelry case, placed it in her coat, and exited via the stairwell."

Camille’s face went completely white. "I... I told Chloe to check on my makeup bag! She must have... she must have made a mistake!"

"A mistake?" Julian asked softly. "She mistook a three-hundred-and-fifty-thousand-dollar sapphire bracelet for a lipstick tube?"

Julian stood up from his chair.

"You knew Chloe had the bracelet, Camille," Julian said, taking a slow step toward her. "You staged this spectacle in the ballroom. You used a member of my domestic staff to create a public crisis, knowing she wouldn't have the social standing to defend herself."

"Julian, no!" Camille cried, her voice cracking into a shrill, desperate panic. "Why would I do that? Why would I care about a maid?"

Julian stopped two feet from Camille. He looked down at her with a cold, terrifying disgust.

"Because you wanted to show this room that you had the power to destroy anyone associated with my past," Julian said quietly.

He turned back to face Elena.

"Miss Torres," Julian said softly, his tone shifting entirely, carrying a deep, ancient warmth that made Manager Henderson’s mouth drop open in shock. "Please remove your apron."
