Chapter 8 - THE SHADOW’S LAST WHISPER

In November, a sudden cold front swept down from the Appalachian Mountains, freezing the morning dew across the fields of Middle Tennessee.
Camille was sitting in her brand-new corner office at the riverfront headquarters when her phone buzzed with an encrypted video call notification.
The caller ID displayed the badge of the Federal Correctional Institution in Aliceville, Alabama.
Camille stared at the screen for a moment. Her heart gave a slight, instinctual thud, but her hands remained perfectly steady. She hit the answer button.
The screen flickered to life.
Lorraine Callaway sat behind a scratched plexiglass partition in a drab grey prison jumpsuit. Her once-immaculate hair was now streaked with grey and cut short. The diamonds and velvet were gone, replaced by the harsh, flat glare of institutional fluorescent lighting.
Yet, her eyes still burned with that familiar, dark arrogance.
"Camille," Lorraine’s voice rasped through the tinny intercom speaker.
"Lorraine," Camille replied calmly, sitting back in her leather executive chair. "I’m surprised you called my office directly."
"I used my monthly telephone privilege to reach you," Lorraine sneered, leaning her elbows on the steel counter. "Because my coward of a son refuses to accept my collect calls."
"Andre is focused on running a clean company," Camille said, her tone level and unbothered. "He has nothing left to say to you."
Lorraine laughed—a bitter, hollow rasp. "You think you’ve won, don't you? You think you came into my house, pulled off your little digital trick, and stole my family’s empire."
"I didn't steal anything, Lorraine," Camille said softly. "You destroyed yourself. I simply held up a mirror so the world could see what you were doing."
"You ruined Andre!" Lorraine hissed, her hand slamming against the plexiglass partition. "He was destined for greatness! He could have been governor! He could have merged Meridian with the largest transport cartels in North America! Now he’s wasting millions on your little charity projects and playing house with a clerk's daughter!"
Camille looked at the woman on the screen.
Eight months ago, those words might have cut deep into her soul. They might have made her feel small, unwanted, and temporary.
Now, looking at Lorraine’s bitter, defeated face, Camille felt nothing but a quiet, profound pity.
"Andre isn't ruined, Lorraine," Camille said gently. "For thirty-eight years, he was a ghost living in your shadow. Now he’s a real man. He smiles. He sleeps through the night. He runs a company built on trust instead of fear."
"He will come back to me!" Lorraine snarled, her fingers clutching the plastic phone receiver until her knuckles turned white. "Blood is thicker than water! When he realizes how hard the corporate world really is without my guidance, he will come crawling back to this prison to ask for my help!"
Camille leaned forward toward her web camera, her hazel eyes locking onto Lorraine’s with absolute, unyielding strength.
"He won't come back, Lorraine," Camille said clearly. "Because he has a real family now. A family built on love, respect, and truth."
Camille reached out her hand toward the desk control panel.
"Enjoy your stay in Aliceville, Lorraine," Camille added softly. "This is the last time you will ever hear my voice."
Before Lorraine could shout another insult, Camille tapped the red disconnect button on her screen.
The feed died instantly. The screen went black.

Camille sat back in her chair, took a deep, peaceful breath of air, and looked out her window at the river flowing steadily toward the distant horizon.
The past was finally, completely dead.
