Part 8

The word stayed in the air.

Murder.

It was such a heavy word that it felt impossible to attach it to Robert.

My Robert.

The man who woke up before sunrise every morning.

The man who sang badly while making coffee.

The man who never stepped over a struggling person without helping.

A man like that didn’t simply disappear.

He didn’t just become a name on a memorial stone.

I stared at Chloe.

The woman who had tried to take my home.

The woman who had humiliated me.

The woman I believed I understood.

But standing there now…

I realized something terrifying.

Maybe I had never understood her at all.

Dan stepped forward.

“Stop.”

His voice was sharp.

“You expect us to believe you?”

Chloe looked at him.

“I don’t expect you to trust me.”

A pause.

“Not after what I did.”

That answer surprised me.

Because Chloe didn’t defend herself.

She didn’t blame anyone else.

She admitted it.

“You lied,” I said.

“Yes.”

“You tried to take my house.”

Her eyes lowered.

“Yes.”

“You manipulated my son.”

A tear appeared.

“Yes.”

Dan looked shocked.

Maybe he expected another excuse.

Another performance.

But there was nothing.

Only guilt.

“Then why are you here?” I asked.

Chloe looked toward the wooden box on the table.

“The same reason you are.”

I frowned.

“What?”

She took a slow breath.

“I was looking for the evidence.”

Dan laughed bitterly.

“Evidence?”

He shook his head.

“You’re saying you were secretly helping us?”

“No.”

Chloe looked at him.

“I was helping myself.”

That honesty was almost worse.

“Victor had something over me,” she continued.

My eyes narrowed.

“Victor?”

She nodded.

The name again.

The same name connected to Robert’s death.

“What does he have on you?”

Chloe hesitated.

Then she reached into her purse.

She pulled out a phone.

Not her normal phone.

An older one.

Damaged.

“This.”

She placed it on the table.

Dan picked it up.

“What is this?”

“Proof.”

She unlocked it.

There were dozens of files.

Messages.

Documents.

Photos.

My stomach tightened.

“Three years ago,” Chloe said quietly,

“I was working for a real estate company.”

She looked at me.

“Before I met Dan.”

I listened.

“Victor approached me.”

Her voice became lower.

“He knew I was ambitious.”

Of course.

Victor had always known people’s weaknesses.

“He offered me money.”

“For what?”

Chloe swallowed.

“To find something Robert hid.”

The room became silent.

Dan stared at her.

“So our marriage…”

His voice broke.

“It was planned?”

Chloe closed her eyes.

“I didn’t know who you were at first.”

A pause.

“Not really.”

Dan stepped back.

Pain crossed his face.

“I thought you loved me.”

Chloe looked devastated.

“I did.”

He laughed sadly.

“That’s supposed to make me feel better?”

She didn’t answer.

I looked at the phone.

The files.

The proof.

“Why did Victor need the evidence?”

Chloe looked at me.

“Because Robert found out what he did.”

“What did he do?”

Chloe hesitated.

Then she said:

“He killed someone.”

My breathing stopped.

“Who?”

She looked at the floor.

“A man named Thomas Reed.”

The name meant nothing to me.

Until Dan spoke.

“Wait.”

He frowned.

“Thomas Reed?”

I turned to him.

“You know that name?”

Dan looked confused.

“I heard it once.”

“Where?”

He walked slowly toward the desk.

“I was going through Dad’s old things years ago.”

A pause.

“There was a newspaper clipping.”

My heart raced.

“What did it say?”

He closed his eyes.

“I don’t remember everything.”

A pause.

“But it said a construction worker disappeared.”

Chloe nodded.

“That was Thomas.”

She looked at me.

“Thomas discovered Victor was stealing money.”

“And Robert found out?”

I whispered.

“Yes.”

The pieces began falling into place.

Robert didn’t die because he found financial fraud.

He found something worse.

Someone had disappeared.

Someone had been killed.

And Robert had discovered the truth.

“Why didn’t Robert tell me?”

The question escaped my mouth.

Chloe looked sad.

“Because he was trying to protect you.”

I looked away.

Because that sounded exactly like him.

Always protecting.

Always carrying the burden alone.

Then Dan noticed something.

The old phone.

A file.

A video.

“Mom.”

His voice changed.

“Look.”

We gathered around.

The video was old.

The quality was poor.

But the voices were clear.

Victor.

Robert.

And another man.

Robert’s voice came through.

“You don’t understand, Victor.”

“You can’t hide this forever.”

Victor answered.

“You should have minded your own business.”

A pause.

Then Robert:

“People will know.”

Victor laughed.

The video shook.

Like someone was hiding while recording.

Then came the sentence that destroyed everything.

“You should have joined Thomas.”

Silence.

Dan covered his mouth.

I felt the room spin.

Because that sentence meant one thing.

Victor wasn’t just involved.

He was responsible.

The video ended.

No one spoke.

Then the lights suddenly went out.

Complete darkness.

Dan grabbed my arm.

“Mom?”

“I’m here.”

A sound came from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Careful.

Someone was inside.

Again.

But this time…

It wasn’t Chloe.

A man’s voice came from the darkness.

“Eleanor.”

My entire body froze.

Because I knew that voice.

The same voice from the phone.

The same voice from twelve years ago.

Victor.

The lights flickered back on.

And there he stood.

Older.

Gray hair.

Still wearing the same perfect suit.

Still wearing the same fake smile.

“Hello, Eleanor.”

Dan moved in front of me.

“What are you doing here?”

Victor smiled.

“I came to finish what Robert started.”

I held the evidence tightly.

“You killed my husband.”

For a moment, Victor said nothing.

Then he smiled.

“Your husband was stubborn.”

My blood turned cold.

“He should have given me the files.”

Dan stepped forward.

“You’re admitting it?”

Victor looked at him.

“Careful, boy.”

Then he looked back at me.

“You spent twelve years believing you were a victim.”

A pause.

“But Robert knew something.”

“What?”

Victor smiled.

“He knew you were stronger than anyone realized.”

The room went silent.

Then he said:

“Which is why he left everything to you.”

I frowned.

“What?”

Victor pointed toward the wall.

“The house.”

My heart stopped.

“The house isn’t just a house, Eleanor.”

A pause.

“It’s the vault.”

My eyes moved around the room.

The walls.

The floors.

Everything Robert built.

And suddenly I understood.

May you like

He hadn’t just built us a home.

He had hidden the truth inside it.
