Chapter 7 - THE TACTICAL BREACH

The atmosphere inside the eighth-floor office turned instantly lethal.

Claire stepped back against the mahogany desk, holding her leather folder tightly against her chest, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

“It’s over, Hallowell,” Claire said, keeping her voice steady despite the terrifying tension in the room. “Ethan Cole has the toll records, the driver’s confession, and the satellite imagery of Vance Chemical’s green tanker truck. The police are already on their way!”

Hallowell let out a cold, bitter laugh. “Ethan Cole is a civilian billionaire who thinks money solves everything. By the time the police sort through the jurisdiction files, you will have suffered a unfortunate, tragic fall down the elevator shaft during a fire evacuation.”

Hallowell nodded to the two security guards. “Grab her.”

The guards lunged forward.

Claire didn't freeze. Her years in high-stress trauma ERs had given her split-second reflexes. She grabbed the heavy brass desk lamp beside her and swung it with all her strength, smashing it across the first guard’s face.

The guard grunted, stumbling back as blood sprayed from his broken nose.

The second guard grabbed Claire’s arm, twisting it behind her back, pinning her against the desk.

“Hold her still!” Hallowell snarled, pulling a pre-filled syringe from his coat pocket—a lethal dose of concentrated potassium chloride meant to induce a fatal heart attack.

CRASH!

The heavy double-paned glass window of the eighth-floor office exploded inward in a shower of brilliant, glittering shards.

A tactical rappel rope swung into the room, followed immediately by Ethan Cole, dressed in dark tactical gear, smashing through the window frame like an unstoppable force of nature.

Before the remaining guard could react, Ethan landed on his feet, drew a high-powered taser, and fired two prongs directly into the guard’s chest. The guard collapsed to the floor, seizing violently as fifty thousand volts of electricity paralyzed his muscles.

Hallowell gasped, stumbling back toward his desk, reaching into his drawer for a hidden pistol.

Ethan crossed the room in two terrifying strides. He grabbed Hallowell’s throat with an iron grip, slamming the administrator’s head flat against the mahogany desk with bone-crushing force.

“Touch that gun,” Ethan growled, his gray eyes burning with a terrifying, demonic fury, “and I will tear your jaw off your face.”

Hallowell whimpered, dropping his hands, his face turning blue under Ethan’s crushing grip.

Behind them, Marcus and three heavily armed security operatives burst through the locked office doors, securing the room in seconds.

Ethan released Hallowell’s throat, letting the corrupt doctor collapse onto the carpet, coughing and gasping for air.

Ethan turned instantly to Claire.

His hard, terrifying expression melted away as he wrapped his broad arms around her, pulling her tightly against his chest. His heart was hammering wildly against her ribs, his breathing ragged and frantic.

“Are you hurt?” Ethan rasped, his hands checking her face, her arms, her shoulders with desperate care. “Did he touch you?”

“I’m okay, Ethan,” Claire whispered, her hands resting against his tactical vest, leaning into his solid warmth. “I’m okay. We got them.”

Ethan buried his face in her hair, letting out a long, shuddering breath of immense relief.

“Don't ever do that to me again,” Ethan murmured, his voice thick with emotion. “Do you understand me? Don't ever put yourself in danger like that again.”

Claire looked up at him, seeing the raw, fierce love burning in his eyes—a love that was no longer hidden behind corporate walls or executive authority.

She smiled gently, leaning up to press a soft, lingering kiss against his cheek.

“Okay,” she whispered. “I promise.”
