Chapter 4 - The Unraveling

The room descended into immediate chaos.
"You can't do this!" Vivian screeched, jumping out of her chair, her manicured composure completely shattering. "Do you have any idea how hard Robert worked to build this company's image?! You sit at home doing nothing while he represents this business! You're just a glorified trust-fund baby taking credit for his sweat!"
"Vivian, stop!" Robert yelled, his voice cracking with panic. He turned to the board members desperately. "Arthur, Sarah, David—you've known me for ten years! You know what I've done for stock values! You can't let her do this over a personal vendetta!"
Arthur Pendelton, the senior-most board member and a long-time associate of my late father, looked up from the financial reports in his hands. His expression was stern and unyielding.
"This isn't a personal vendetta, Robert," Arthur said quietly. "These numbers are indefensible. The legal liabilities alone from these hidden settlements put the entire firm at risk. Ms. Hart is entirely within her rights."
"I call for a vote," I said flatly. "All those in favor of the motion to terminate Robert Blackwell's employment and contract."
Arthur raised his hand immediately. One by one, every single board member raised their hand.
Robert sank back into his chair, looking utterly hollowed out, as if the air had been forcefully removed from his lungs.
"The motion carries unanimously," Marcus announced, recording the vote. "Robert Blackwell is officially removed as CEO of Blackwell Global Logistics. Security has been notified and will escort Mr. and Mrs. Blackwell from the premises immediately. His access to corporate accounts, digital infrastructure, and executive privileges has been revoked as of 8:15 AM."
Vivian looked around the room in absolute disbelief, her lip trembling with rage and humiliation. "This is insane! Robert, tell them you'll sue! Tell them we're taking our clients!"
"With what non-compete clause, Vivian?" I asked, stepping out from behind the table. "Robert's contract explicitly prohibits him from soliciting clients or working for competitors for three years following a termination for cause. If he attempts to touch a single account, our legal team will file for immediate injunctions and asset freezes."
Two security guards stepped into the boardroom, standing tall beside the entrance.
"Mr. Blackwell, Mrs. Blackwell, please gather your personal belongings from the CEO office. We will escort you to the lobby," the head of security said firmly.
Robert didn't fight. He slowly got to his feet, staring at me with a mix of shock, regret, and defeat. "Evelyn... please. Give me a chance to fix this. Don't ruin my career over this."
"You ruined your own career, Robert, the moment you allowed arrogance to replace integrity," I replied coldly. "You taught your wife that people beneath your pay grade don't deserve respect. Today, you learned that you were never as high up as you thought."

Vivian tried to maintain a glare, but as the security officers gestured toward the door, tears of bitter embarrassment began smudging her makeup. The executives who had smirked alongside her at the gala the night before were nowhere to be found; only the cold, silent judgment of the board remained.
They were escorted out through the main lobby—the very lobby where actual staff, the people who kept the company running every day, watched in stunned silence as their former boss was marched out like a common trespasser.
