Chapter 8 - The Balance of the House

Six months later, the spring thaw finally reached the northern edge of Chicago, turning the gray shores of Lake Michigan into a brilliant, sparkling ribbon of blue and silver.

Inside the Mercer mansion, the heavy iron doors no longer felt like a vault.

In the grand dining room, sunlight streamed through the leaded glass windows, casting warm geometric patterns across the mahogany table where a family breakfast was actually taking place.

Lucas sat at the east end of the table, wearing a crisp button-down shirt instead of his usual designer loungewear. He was reviewing a bound portfolio of logistics reports for the upcoming quarter—a portfolio he had helped compile himself.

Across from him sat Adrian, reading the morning financial papers with a cup of black coffee, his shoulders relaxed in a way they hadn't been in a decade.

And at the center of the table, moving gracefully around the room without a single crutch or bandage in sight, Nia Bennett poured fresh orange juice into their glasses, her slate-gray dress replaced by a sharp, professional navy blazer that commanded the room with quiet authority.

The intercom buzzed softly from the kitchen.

Thomas Hale appeared in the doorway, holding a pristine, cream-colored envelope. He didn't look exhausted anymore. In fact, he looked almost cheerful.

"Mr. Mercer," Thomas announced, a faint twitch of amusement at the corner of his mouth. "The domestic employment agency just called."

Adrian didn't look up from his paper. "Tell them we’re fully staffed, Thomas. We haven't had a vacancy in six months."

"I did, sir," Thomas replied smoothly, stepping into the room and placing the envelope gently beside Nia’s coffee cup. "I just thought you'd want to know... they were calling to ask if Miss Bennett was available to consult for three other high-net-worth estates in Winnetka that are struggling with chronic employee turnover."

Lucas laughed, shaking his head as he reached for a piece of toast. "Good luck with that. She’s already taken."

Nia picked up the cream-colored envelope, turning it over in her hands before slipping it unopened into her briefcase. She walked over to the head of the table where Adrian sat, resting one hand casually on the back of his chair.

Adrian looked up, his glacial blue eyes warming instantly as they met hers.

"Are you taking consulting offers, Miss Bennett?" Adrian asked, his voice low and teasing.

"Not a chance, Mr. Mercer," Nia replied, a bright, confident smile illuminating her dark eyes. "I’ve already found my permanent placement. Besides..."

She leaned down slightly, her voice dropping into a soft, conspiratorial whisper that only he could hear.

"...someone has to keep the books balanced around here, or this entire empire would probably collapse in a week."

May you like

Adrian reached up, placing his hand gently over hers where it rested on the back of his chair. He didn't say a word. He didn't need to.

For the first time in eight years, the Mercer house wasn't a fortress of silence and hidden pain. It was a home. And the audit was finally complete.
