Chapter 5 - The Hand That Strikes

The evening shift on Tuesday was quiet.
The gossip about the boardroom coup had swept through the hospital like a wildfire, but Clara had kept her head down, focusing on her patients. She felt a strange, profound sense of relief, but also a deep, lingering anxiety.
She was no longer three months behind on her mother’s payments. In fact, her mother was safer than she had ever been. But Clara knew that in Roman’s world, everything came with a price.
At midnight, Clara walked out of the hospital lobby. The freezing rain had stopped, leaving the asphalt of the parking lot glistening like black glass under the orange sodium lights.
She wrapped her wool coat tightly around herself, her boots crunching on the thin ice.
A single, black SUV was parked near the exit of the lot.
As she approached, the rear door opened.
Roman sat inside, the interior of the vehicle smelling of rich leather and expensive tobacco. He looked pale, but his eyes were as sharp as ever.
Clara stopped at the edge of the open door. "You shouldn't be out of bed. Your sutures need another week to fully heal."
"I have excellent doctors," Roman said, a tiny, rare smile touching the corner of his lips. "And I wanted to see you."
"Why did you do it, Roman?" Clara asked, her voice trembling slightly in the cold air. "The money for my mother... the boardroom... Halpern. Why?"
"I told you," Roman said. "The Romanov family pays its debts. You saved my life. Halpern tried to take your dignity. I balanced the ledger."
"But I can't accept this," Clara said, her eyes filling with tears. "This is too much. I don't want to be indebted to... to someone like you."
"You are not indebted to me, Clara," Roman said, his voice softening into a genuine, quiet warmth. "The debt was mine, and it is paid. You are free. Your mother is safe. Halpern is currently packing his bags for a very long, very uncomfortable retirement in a state where he cannot practice medicine."
Clara looked at him, seeing the terrifying power he wielded, but also the strange, absolute honor that governed his actions.
"What happens now?" she asked.
"Now, you go back to work," Roman said, leaning back into the leather seats. "You take care of your patients. You visit your mother in her new suite. And if anyone in that hospital ever treats you with anything less than the respect you deserve..."
He paused, his gray eyes locking onto hers with a chilling, beautiful intensity.
"...you let Leo know."
Clara stared at him for a long moment, the cold wind blowing a few stray strands of her auburn hair across her face. For the first time in years, the heavy, crushing weight in her chest was gone.
"Thank you, Roman," she whispered.

He nodded once, a slow, solemn gesture of respect.
Clara closed the door of the SUV and watched as it slid quietly into the Chicago night, its red taillights disappearing into the frozen mist. She turned and walked back toward the hospital, her head held high, her ponytail bouncing against her shoulders, finally free.
