Chapter 6 - The Fall of the House of Sterling

The storm cleared by Friday morning, leaving the sky over Lake Geneva a brilliant, arctic blue.
At seven-thirty AM, three dark grey sedans bearing federal government plates rolled up the long, winding driveway of the Romano estate, their tires crunching loudly over the frozen gravel.
Inside the grand dining room, Vanessa Sterling sat at the long mahogany table, sipping black tea from a porcelain cup, wearing a dark green velvet dress. She looked triumphant, convinced that her legal team’s moves from the previous night had forced Gabriel into a corner.
Gabriel sat at the head of the table, wearing a dark bespoke suit, quietly reading the morning financial papers. Evelyn stood near the sideboard, wearing a clean charcoal wool dress—no longer a maid's apron—holding a silver carafe of fresh coffee. Titan lay contentedly at Evelyn’s feet, his heavy chin resting on her shoe.
The dining room doors were thrown open.
Victor Sloane entered, followed by four federal agents in dark suits holding official arrest warrants.
Vanessa set her tea cup down with a sharp clink, a smug smile touching her lips. "Ah, Director Vance. You're early. The documents regarding Gabriel's illegal real-estate holdings are on the side table—"
"Miss Vanessa Sterling?" the lead federal agent interrupted, walking straight past Gabriel toward her chair. "You are under arrest for federal bank fraud, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy to commit murder in connection with the 2018 death of Clara Romano."
Vanessa’s smile froze. The color drained from her face so fast she looked like a corpse. "What? This... this is a mistake! My father is Arthur Sterling! You are supposed to be arresting Gabriel!"
"Your father was taken into federal custody at his Chicago penthouse forty minutes ago, Miss Sterling," Director Vance said coldly, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his coat. "Mr. Romano provided the federal prosecutor's office with sixteen gigabytes of encrypted financial data and taped conversations exposing your family's entire operation."
Vanessa whipped her head toward Gabriel, her dark eyes wild with pure, unadulterated horror. "You... you set us up... For a year... you let me believe..."
Gabriel slowly folded his morning paper, set it down beside his plate, and turned his dark eyes onto her.
"You brought your father's blood money into my house, Vanessa," Gabriel said, his voice smooth, cold, and terrible in its absolute clarity. "You thought you were buying an empire. You were simply buying your father's ticket to a federal prison."
Vanessa shrieked, knocking her tea cup onto the white linen tablecloth, sending hot brown liquid pooling across the lace. "You demon! You cold, ruthless bastard!"
She looked frantically around the room for an ally, her gaze landing on Evelyn, who stood quietly near the sideboard, her posture straight, her chin raised.
"And you!" Vanessa spat, pointing her cuffed hands at Evelyn as the agents pulled her from her chair. "You dirty little maid! You slept your way into his house! You're nothing! You hear me? You're a street rat!"
Titan rose instantly from the floor, letting out a single, thunderous bark that rattled the glass in the chandeliers.
Vanessa flinched backward, tripping over her own velvet skirt, and was roughly hauled out of the room by the two federal agents, her hysterical screams echoing down the grand marble hallway until the front doors slammed shut.
Silence returned to the dining room.
Evelyn took a slow breath, her hands shaking slightly as she set the silver carafe down on the sideboard.
Gabriel stood up from his chair, walked down the length of the long table, and stopped two feet from her. He looked down at her pale face, his eyes lingering on the light bruise on her left cheek.
"It is over, Evelyn," Gabriel said softly. "The debt for my sister is paid."
Evelyn looked up into his eyes, seeing for the first time the deep, exhausted pain that lay beneath his cold mask. "And what happens now, Mr. Romano?"
May you like
Gabriel reached out, his warm fingers gently closing around her hand, pulling her toward him.
"Now," he murmured, "we find out who Evelyn Hart really is."
