Chapter 3 - THE DIGITAL RECORD

The world inside the La Jolla mansion seemed to come apart at the seams in the minutes that followed.

Ryan didn't say another word in the driveway. He didn't yell at Madison. He didn't listen to her desperate, cascading excuses as she followed him up the porch steps.

He took his mother by her bruised wrist—gently, as if she were made of thin glass—and guided her inside through the foyer. He brought her into the main formal living room, setting her down on the velvet sofa. He motioned for Claire and Sophie to follow.

Madison tried to step through the threshold behind them.

Ryan turned at the doorway, placing his large palm flat against the mahogany frame, blocking her path.

“Stay in the courtyard,” Ryan said.

“Ryan, you cannot leave me outside like a criminal!” Madison shrieked, her voice echoing into the high ceilings of the foyer. “This is my home! We are getting married in six weeks!”

“If you step across this threshold before I view that footage,” Ryan said, his dark eyes terrifyingly calm, “I will have private security remove you by force.”

He shut the massive oak doors in her face.

The heavy brass lock clicked into place with a sound like a gun closing.

Inside the living room, the silence was thick and heavy.

Helen sat on the sofa, her barefoot legs tucked slightly beneath her nightgown, her hands still clutching the silver-framed photograph of Ryan as a twelve-year-old. Claire sat beside her, gently wrapping a warm wool blanket around the older woman’s shoulders.

Ryan knelt in front of Sophie near the glass coffee table.

“Soph,” Ryan said softly, taking out his personal laptop from his leather briefcase and setting it on the glass table. “Can I borrow your camera for five minutes?”

Sophie looked at her mother, who gave her a reassuring nod. The little girl unclipped the pink strap from her neck and placed the plastic toy into Ryan’s hands.

On the side of the toy was a small rubber seal covering a micro-USB port.

Ryan’s hands were remarkably steady as he pulled a black data cable from his bag, plugging one end into the pink toy and the other into his high-performance laptop.

On the laptop screen, a file folder automatically popped up.

Drive: VTECH_KID_CAM

Folder: DCIM/100MEDIA

Inside the folder was a single video file recorded three hours earlier, at 1:42 PM.

File size: 412 MB. Format: .AVI.

Ryan didn't hesitate. He double-clicked the file.

The laptop’s high-definition screen lit up, illuminating the dark living room with a harsh blue light.

The camera angle was low—roughly three feet off the ground—and slightly tilted, reflecting the vantage point of a four-year-old child hiding behind the slatted wooden doors of the hallway linen closet.

The audio began with a sharp, static hiss, followed by the clear, unmistakably cruel voice of Madison Vale.

“You think because you raised him in a trailer park, you have a right to sit in this house?”

On the screen, the wide-angle plastic lens showed the main hallway near the master bedroom.

Helen was standing near the wall, wearing her cream cardigan, holding a small navy blue folder against her chest. Madison was standing inches from her face, her body language aggressive, her finger poking repeatedly into Helen’s collarbone.

“I’m warning you, Helen,” Madison’s recorded voice hissed through the laptop speakers. “Ryan belongs to me now. This estate belongs to me. His accounts belong to me.”

“He is my son,” Helen’s recorded voice replied, trembling but brave. “And he will see who you are eventually.”

“He won't see anything,” Madison scoffed on the video. “He’s in Singapore working ninety hours a week so I can buy five-thousand-dollar shoes. He doesn't have time for a senile old woman who can't keep track of her medication.”

On the video, Helen turned to walk away toward her bedroom.

Madison reached out, grabbed Helen’s left wrist with crushing force—the exact grip that had left the deep purple bruise—and violently yanked the older woman backward.

Helen stumbled, her slippers sliding out from under her, and fell heavily against the hard oak doorframe.

The navy blue folder slipped from her hands, scattering papers across the floor.

“Get out of my sight!” Madison screamed on the recording, her face contorting into a mask of pure rage that Ryan had never seen in his two years of dating her. “If you are still in this house when the wedding contract is finalized, I will have you certified incompetent! You will spend the rest of your pathetic life in a locked ward, do you understand me? You have to disappear first!”

The video recording abruptly cut to black as Sophie’s little hand had accidentally hit the stop button on top of the camera.

The silence that followed inside the living room was absolute.

Claire covered her mouth, tears flowing silently down her cheeks.

Helen lowered her head, closing her eyes as if the reality of seeing her own humiliation displayed on a screen was too much to bear.

Ryan sat motionless in front of the coffee table.

His face was completely devoid of emotion. The exhaustion, the jet lag, the confusion—all of it had been burned away by a cold, surgical rage.

He slowly closed his laptop.

He stood up, picked up the pink plastic camera, and handed it back to Sophie.

“Thank you, Sophie,” Ryan said, his voice flat, even, and terrifyingly soft. “You saved my mother.”

He turned to Claire.

“Take Mom upstairs to my master suite,” Ryan commanded gently. “Lock the interior door. Stay with her.”

“What are you going to do, Ryan?” Helen asked, her voice filled with sudden panic as she looked at her son’s expression. “Ryan, please don't do something reckless.”

Ryan walked over to the sofa, bent down, and kissed his mother softly on her forehead.

“I’m going to clean my house, Mom,” Ryan said.
