Chapter 4 - The Unraveling

The boardroom exploded into absolute chaos.

Marcus Vance stood up so quickly his heavy leather chair rolled back into the glass wall behind him. "What did you say?!"

"He's lying!" Vanessa shrieked, her face turning white as she pointed a finger at me. "He forged those documents! He's trying to frame us because I dumped him!"

"Check the server logs yourself, Marcus," I said, sliding three printed legal binders across the table toward the board members. "The forensic audit was completed at four o'clock this morning by an independent federal auditing firm. The transfer signatures don't belong to me. They belong to Charles Whitmore, using his executive oversight privileges."

Charles stood frozen at the head of the table.

The unshakeable, powerful tycoon who had stood on his stone terrace drinking champagne while my mother shivered in the mud was gone. His jaw worked silently, his chest heaving beneath his custom Italian vest, his face draining of all color.

"This... this is an internal accounting discrepancy," Charles stammered, his voice lacking its usual thunder. "A simple administrative error regarding management fees—"

"Management fees of four point two million dollars, Charles?" Marcus Vance barked, his voice filled with cold fury as he read through the certified audit pages. "Transferred directly into a private account registered in the Bahamas? In Miss Whitmore's name?!"

Marcus turned to face the rest of the board.

"This isn't an internal discrepancy," Marcus announced loudly. "This is grand larceny, wire fraud, and a direct breach of SEC regulations!"

"Marcus, listen to me—" Charles began, reaching out a hand.

"Don't speak to me, Charles!" Marcus snapped. He turned his eyes toward me, a look of profound respect and apology in his eyes. "Daniel... how long have you known about this?"

"I discovered the anomaly three weeks ago," I answered truthfully. "I was preparing to bring it to the board after the wedding. I thought... I foolishly thought that if I married Vanessa, if I became part of their family, Charles would settle the discrepancy quietly and return the funds to the company's research department."

I looked directly at Vanessa, whose hands were shaking so violently she had to grip the edge of the conference table.

"But after seeing how your family treats people who have less power than you," I continued, "I realized that mercy is wasted on tyrants."

The heavy oak doors at the back of the boardroom opened without a knock.

Two men in dark suits stepped into the room, followed by a woman carrying a leather briefcase. They carried badges pinned to their lapels: Federal Bureau of Investigation — Financial Crimes Division.

"Charles Whitmore? Vanessa Whitmore?" the lead agent asked, his voice flat and authoritative.

Vanessa let out a choked scream, stepping back against the glass window. "Father! Do something! Call our lawyers!"

Charles couldn't move. He stood behind his plush CEO chair, looking at the federal agents, then at the board members who were already turning their backs on him, and finally at me.

"You ruined us," Charles whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of disbelief and utter ruin. "Over a... over a joke on the lawn?"

"No, Charles," I said, leaning forward across the table, my voice echoing clearly off the glass walls. "You ruined yourself. You just thought nobody would ever make you pay for it."
