Chapter 7 - The Collapse of the Narrative

The silence inside Department 12 was deafening.

Derek Rowan sat motionless at the counsel table. The color had drained completely from his face, leaving his skin a sallow, sickly gray. Beside him, Richard Vance looked as though he had been hit by a freight train.

"Your... Your Honor," Richard Vance stammered, scrambling through his papers. "My client... my client denies these allegations. The credit card charges are... they require context—"

"I asked your client a direct question, Mr. Vance," Judge Gomez interrupted, her voice dangerously quiet. She leaned forward over the bench, her sharp eyes locked onto Derek. "Mr. Rowan, stand up."

Derek stood up slowly, his hands trembling slightly as he buttoned his suit jacket.

"Did you," Judge Gomez repeated, word by word, "authorize a fifteen-hundred-dollar expenditure to a social media distribution network at 9:12 PM on August 21st?"

"Your Honor," Derek began, his voice lacking its usual smooth, polished charm, "I... I manage a large marketing and technology portfolio for my firm. My assistant handles several recurring digital promotional accounts. I was not personally aware of—"

"Do not lie to me in my courtroom, Mr. Rowan," Judge Gomez slammed her hand down onto the mahogany bench with a sound like a pistol shot. "I am looking at the digital receipt submitted by counsel. The transaction was authenticated via facial recognition software on your personal cell phone at 9:12 PM."

Monica Ruiz, sitting at the CPS table, stared at Derek in total horror. She picked up her pen, drew a heavy black line through her initial recommendation notes, and began furiously writing a new assessment.

Victoria Vance stepped forward, laying a second set of documents on the evidence table.

"Your Honor," Victoria said, "we also submit Exhibit C: an emergency affidavit from Mark Brody, certified digital forensics specialist. Mr. Brody tracked the initial upload of the nursery video to an IP address registered to Sarah Miller—Mr. Rowan’s PR manager and dinner companion on the night of the incident. The raw video file was downloaded directly from Mr. Rowan’s master admin desktop cloud portal at 9:28 PM."

Judge Gomez flipped through the forensic printouts, her expression hardening with every line she read.

"This court," Judge Gomez stated, looking up, "has seen many bitter custody battles. But I have rarely witnessed a spectacle of such calculated, malicious cruelty as what has been presented here today."

She turned her attention to Monica Ruiz. "Miss Ruiz. In light of this evidence, what is the county’s revised recommendation regarding the minor child?"

Monica Ruiz stood up immediately. "Your Honor, CPS officially withdraws its protective hold against Tessa Rowan. The evidence clearly demonstrates that Mrs. Rowan acted reasonably under direct medical supervision while incapacitated by a severe medical emergency. Furthermore, based on the father’s calculated actions to manufacture a child endangerment crisis for personal legal leverage, CPS recommends immediate, full physical custody be granted to the mother, with all visitation rights for the father suspended pending a comprehensive psychological evaluation."

Derek took a sharp, gasping breath. "No! Your Honor, you can't do this! She’s unstable! She was wearing earplugs!"

"Silence!" Judge Gomez boomed, pointing a finger directly at Derek. "You left your feverish, incapacitated wife alone with a newborn infant while you drank at a lounge, ignored her desperate phone calls, and coordinated a public execution of her character using paid internet bots! You are lucky, Mr. Rowan, that I am sitting in Family Court and not presiding over a criminal trial for felony child endangerment and conspiracy!"

Judge Gomez picked up her gavel.

"It is hereby ordered," Judge Gomez declared, "that temporary physical and legal custody of minor infant James Rowan is awarded immediately and exclusively to Tessa Rowan. Mr. Derek Rowan is ordered to surrender all keys, access codes, and security credentials to the marital residence on Oakridge Drive, and to vacate the premises by 12:00 PM today under police escort."

BANG.

The gavel struck the sound block.

"Mrs. Rowan," Judge Gomez added, her voice softening slightly as she looked down at Tessa. "You may go to the hospital and pick up your son."

Tessa closed her eyes. A single, hot tear spilled over her lashes and ran down her cheek—not a tear of sorrow or fear, but of profound, overwhelming relief.

Beside her, Clara wrapped her arms around Tessa’s shoulders, weeping silently.

As Derek was led out of the courtroom by court bailiffs to surrender his keys, he turned his head to look back at Tessa. For the first time, his polished, arrogant mask was completely gone. In its place was raw, terrified realization.

Tessa looked back at him, her chin held high, her eyes cold and clear.

"This is just the beginning, Derek," she whispered to herself. "Now we talk about the Cayman Islands."
