Chapter 6 - A New Order

By dawn, the storm had finally passed, leaving behind a clear, crisp morning sun that filtered through the grand floor-to-ceiling windows of the estate library.

The vast house was quiet.

In the master study, Mason sat behind his large oak desk, a hot cup of black tea resting near his hand. His chest still hurt from the effects of the poison, but his mind was crystal clear.

Evelyn sat across from him, going through a stack of legal documents.

“Daniel and Claire have been handed over to federal authorities,” Evelyn reported calmly. “Prosecutor Miller was more than happy to accept the evidence. With the silver box, the audio recordings, and Thomas’s testimony, they will both be serving life sentences in maximum-security facilities without the possibility of parole.”

Mason took a slow sip of his tea. “And Thomas?”

“He was cleared of all charges,” Evelyn said softly. “Daniel was holding his granddaughter hostage in a warehouse in Queens. Marcus’s team located the girl three hours ago and brought her home safely. Thomas has requested retirement, and I have granted him a full pension.”

Mason nodded slowly. “Good.”

A gentle knock sounded at the heavy library door.

Hannah stepped into the room, holding Lily by the hand.

Both of them had been provided with clean, expensive clothes from the estate’s private wardrobe. Lily wore a soft yellow sundress and brand-new leather shoes, her dark hair neatly brushed and tied with a silk ribbon.

Hannah looked nervous, holding a small leather suitcase in her hand.

“Mr. Vale,” Hannah began softly. “We came to say goodbye. Thank you for protecting us, but we know it’s time for us to leave.”

Mason set his teacup down and stood up from behind his desk.

He walked around the table, stopping in front of the mother and daughter.

“Leave?” Mason asked, tilting his head. “Where are you planning to go, Hannah?”

“I... I have an aunt in Ohio,” Hannah said softly. “I can find work there. We don't want to be a burden to your family.”

Mason let out a short, quiet laugh.

“Hannah, you don't understand,” Mason said gently. “You aren't a burden. You are the reason I am standing here breathing air this morning.”

He knelt down in front of seven-year-old Lily once again.

“Lily,” Mason said softly. “Do you like this house?”

Lily looked around at the towering bookshelves, the grand fireplace, and the bright sunlight streaming through the windows.

“It’s big,” she said honestly. “And the cookies in the kitchen are really good.”

Mason smiled—a genuine, warm smile that reached his eyes.

“How would you like to live here permanent?” Mason asked her. “In the big suite on the second floor with the balcony facing the gardens?”

Lily’s eyes widened. “Really? Like a princess?”

“Better than a princess,” Mason said. “Like a Vale.”

Hannah stepped forward, her hands trembling. “Mr. Vale... we can’t accept that. I’m just a kitchen assistant. I don't belong in a place like this.”

Mason stood up and looked Hannah directly in the eye.

“You are no longer a kitchen assistant, Hannah,” Mason said with absolute finality. “As of this morning, you are the Director of Estate Operations. You will manage the entire household staff, oversee the estate budget, and report directly to my mother. Your salary will be two hundred thousand dollars a year, plus full health benefits and a trust fund established for Lily’s college education.”

Hannah stared at him, her mouth opening in total disbelief. Tears filled her eyes, pouring down her cheeks.

“Mr. Vale... I don't know what to say...”

“You don't have to say anything,” Mason said softly. “You raised a daughter with more courage, honesty, and integrity than any of the high-society elites who sat at my table last night. She saved my life because she saw a wrong and refused to sit quiet. That is the kind of blood I want in this house.”

Evelyn walked over, placing a gentle hand on Hannah’s shoulder.

“Welcome to the family, Hannah,” Evelyn said with a warm smile.
