Chapter 7 - THE RECKONING

By three o’clock that afternoon, the news of the collapse of the Romano crime family hit the tri-state area like a nuclear explosion.

Federal agents executed simultaneous raid warrants across twenty-two locations in Jersey City, Newark, and Manhattan. Salvatore Romano was arrested directly outside the gates of the Moretti estate, filmed by news helicopters as he was led away in handcuffs to face life imprisonment without parole under the RICO act.

Vivian Romano was taken into federal witness protection, her social standing, fortune, and freedom permanently erased.

Inside the Moretti mansion, a quiet, profound transformation was underway.

The heavy, dark cloud of suspicion, fear, and paranoia that had hung over the estate for months was completely gone.

In the sunlit east wing—a gorgeous suite of four rooms overlooking the rose gardens—Elena Rossi stood in the center of a spacious, high-ceilinged bedroom, holding a cardboard packing box containing her personal clothes.

A team of professional movers, hired by Adrian, were efficiently carrying in new mahogany furniture, plush velvet rugs, and stacks of new clothes for both Elena and Mia.

Mia was jumping up and down on the wide, soft king-sized bed, wearing her yellow rain boots—still on the wrong feet—giggling uncontrollably as Bruno lay beside the bed, resting his massive head on the mattress, watching her with warm, soft eyes.

Elena walked over to the tall French doors leading out to the balcony, her eyes wet with tears of profound relief.

A gentle knock sounded at the open bedroom door.

Adrian Moretti stepped into the room. He had showered, shaved, and changed into a comfortable grey cashmere sweater and dark trousers.

Elena turned around quickly, wiping her eyes with her sleeve. “Mr. Moretti... please, this is too much. You didn't have to give us the master guest suite—”

“Elena,” Adrian interrupted softly, walking into the room. “Stop calling me Mr. Moretti. My name is Adrian.”

Elena swallowed hard, looking up at him. “Adrian... I don't know how to repay you for any of this. My daughter and I... we were nobody.”

Adrian walked over to the bed, dropping down on his knee to Mia’s level.

Mia immediately stopped jumping, leaned over the edge of the mattress, and pressed her soft, sticky hand against Adrian’s broad cheek.

“Hello, car man,” Mia said cheerfully.

Adrian let out a short, genuine laugh—a sound so rare and light that Elena had never heard it before. He caught Mia’s small hand in his large palm, kissing her tiny knuckles with gentle, fatherly care.

“Hello, little one,” Adrian said softly. “Did you teach Bruno how to wear boots yet?”

Mia shook her head solemnly. “Bruno has big feet. No boots fit him.”

Adrian smiled, standing up and turning to Elena.

He pulled a heavy white legal folder from beneath his arm and handed it to her.

“What is this?” Elena asked, her fingers brushing against the crisp paper.

“That is the court-approved settlement from the Romano estate,” Adrian explained plainly. “Four point five million dollars, placed into an irrevocable trust for Mia’s education and your personal living expenses. The federal judge signed it an hour ago as restitution for your husband’s death.”

Elena stared at the document, her jaw dropping open, her knees going weak. “Four... four million dollars? Adrian... no... I can't take this—”

“It’s not charity, Elena,” Adrian said, his grey eyes dead serious. “It’s justice. Your husband earned that money through his blood, and those monsters stole it from you. Now it’s back where it belongs.”

Elena dropped the folder onto the nightstand, buried her face in her hands, and began to weep—not with fear or sorrow, but with the overwhelming, clean realization that her long, horrific nightmare was finally over. Her daughter was safe. Her husband’s memory was honored. She would never have to worry about rent, food, or eviction ever again.

Adrian stepped forward, his movements hesitant, unfamiliar with comfort. He placed one heavy, protective hand on Elena’s shoulder, holding her gently until her breathing slowed.

When she finally wiped her eyes and looked up at him, her dark eyes held a warmth and deep connection that made Adrian’s heart beat faster in his chest.

“Stay,” Elena whispered, her voice filled with quiet emotion.

Adrian froze, staring at her.

“What did you say?” Adrian asked softly.

“Stay,” Elena repeated, stepping closer to him, her hand touching his arm. “Don't leave us alone in this big room. Stay and have tea with us.”

Adrian looked down at her hand on his sleeve, then turned his gaze to Bruno, who gave a happy, deep woof from the rug, thumping his heavy tail against the floorboards.

A soft, warm light washed across Adrian’s dark granite face.

“I’ll stay,” Adrian said quietly.
