Chapter 10 - The Debt Paid In Full

Six months later, late autumn had brought golden leaves to the grounds of the Moretti estate.

The courtyard was decorated with elegant white roses, floating silk ribbons, and warm lanterns that cast a soft glow across the manicured lawns. Over two hundred guests had gathered—not the cold, scheming elites of Chicago’s high society, but the real people who formed the heart of Dominic’s world.

Dock workers in clean suits sat beside senior surgeons from Johns Hopkins. Local precinct officers shared tables with neighborhood families whose children had been treated at the new clinic.

Inside the estate’s grand bridal suite, Hannah stood in front of a full-length mirror, taking a long, deep breath.

She wore an exquisite, off-the-shoulder gown of ivory lace, her dark hair styled in elegant waves pinned back with subtle pearl clips. On her right index finger, shining brilliantly in the soft sunlight, was the silver Moretti signet ring Dominic had given her on the docks.

Beside her, Eleanor sat in her armchair, wearing a deep navy silk dress, shedding soft tears of joy.

“You are breathtaking, my dear,” Eleanor said softly, holding out her hands.

Hannah walked over, kneeling beside her and taking Eleanor’s hands into her own, automatically placing two fingers against the older woman’s wrist out of habit.

Eleanor chuckled softly. “Seventy-four beats per minute, Dr. Moretti-to-be.”

“A perfect rhythm,” Hannah smiled, kissing Eleanor’s cheek. “Thank you for welcoming me into your home, Eleanor.”

“You didn't just join this home, Hannah,” Eleanor said emotionally. “You healed it.”

A knock sounded at the door, and Walter stepped into the room, wearing a grand tuxedo with a white rose on his lapel. “It is time, Miss Vance. The groom is waiting.”

Hannah stood up, holding her bouquet of white roses and orchids, taking a deep breath as she stepped out into the grand hallway.

Outside in the courtyard, beneath a soaring wooden arch covered in white flowers, stood Dominic.

He was dressed in a tailored black tuxedo, looking striking, powerful, and impeccably handsome. His dark hair was swept back, and his dark eyes were fixed entirely on the French doors at the back of the house.

When the doors opened and Hannah stepped out onto the stone walkway, the entire gathering went silent.

Dominic watched her walk toward him, his heart pounding in his chest with a fierce, profound joy he had never experienced in his thirty-five years of life.

Hannah reached the altar, stepping up beside him. Dominic reached out, taking her soft hand into his heavy, strong fingers, squeezing gently.

“You look beautiful,” Dominic whispered, his eyes shining.

“You don't look so bad yourself, Mr. Moretti,” she whispered back with a subtle, radiant smile.

The judge—a respected retired state supreme court justice whom Dominic had known for years—stepped forward, opening his ceremonial book.

“We are gathered here today,” the judge began, his deep voice carrying across the quiet courtyard, “to join this man and this woman in holy matrimony. Marriage is not merely a legal contract, but an absolute binding of two souls, built on trust, protection, and unshakeable loyalty.”

As the service progressed, the judge turned to Dominic. “Dominic Moretti, do you take Hannah Vance to be your lawful wedded wife, to have and to hold, in sickness and in health, for richer or for poorer, till death do you part?”

Dominic looked directly into Hannah’s eyes, his voice clear, deep, and unwavering. “I do.”

The judge turned to Hannah. “Hannah Vance, do you take Dominic Moretti to be your lawful wedded husband, to have and to hold, in sickness and in health, for richer or for poorer, till death do you part?”

Hannah smiled, her eyes filled with happy tears. “I do.”

“By the authority vested in me,” the judge pronounced, “I now declare you husband and wife. Dominic, you may kiss your bride.”

Dominic didn't hesitate. He pulled Hannah gently into his arms, dipping her slightly as he pressed his lips to hers in a deep, passionate kiss that drew thunderous applause and cheers from the two hundred guests gathered in the courtyard.

Sal the dock worker cheered loudly from the front row, throwing his hat into the air, while Walter wiped a tear from his eye near the terrace.

When they parted, Dominic looked down at his wife, placing his arm around her waist as they turned to face their gathered family and friends.

The cold leather strap, the dark lies of Baltimore, the poisonous wine, and the dangerous debts of the past had all been washed away completely. What remained was an unshakeable empire built on healing, protection, and a love that no amount of money could ever buy.

Dominic leaned down, whispering softly into Hannah’s ear as they walked down the aisle together into their new life.

“Welcome home, Mrs. Moretti.”

Hannah smiled, resting her head against his broad shoulder. “I’m already home, Dominic.”
