Chapter 5 - Brotherly Love

Dominic didn't fire the gun. He lowered the weapon, engaged the safety, and slipped it back into his holster.

His face remained completely unreadable, but inside, a cold, bitter flame ignited in his chest.

Leo Moretti was thirty-two years old—nine years younger than Dominic. When their father died five years ago, Dominic had taken over the heavy weight of the family business, insulating Leo from the violence and the law enforcement scrutiny. Dominic had given Leo a three-million-dollar annual trust, a seat on the board of the family’s legitimate shipping firm, and full access to the estate’s north wing.

Leo was supposed to be the clean Moretti. The educated one. The brother who went to Columbia Business School while Dominic spent his twenties in backrooms and federal courtrooms.

“Marco,” Dominic said quietly.

“Boss?”

“Lock Victor in this cellar. Take his phone. Leave him one bottle of water. No food.”

Victor began to scream and plead, but Marco pulled the heavy iron door shut, sliding the brass bolt into place. The sound of Victor’s shouts was instantly muffled by three feet of solid oak and stone.

Dominic walked back up the stairs, stepping out into the cold rain once more.

The rain was falling harder now, washing the dirt off his shoes as he walked toward the main mansion.

He entered through the rear terrace doors, stepping into the grand kitchen. The room was warm, filled with the rich, comforting scent of roasted chicken, garlic, and fresh bread.

At the large oak kitchen island sat Maya.

She was wearing a oversized dry sweater belonging to one of the housekeepers, her small feet dangling off the stool. In front of her sat a large bowl of chicken noodle soup and a hot chocolate with extra marshmallows. Her mother, Elena, stood beside her, gently drying the little girl’s dark blond hair with a soft towel.

When Dominic walked into the room, Elena instantly stood up straight, her hands trembling.

Dominic raised a hand to calm her. He walked over to the island and stood beside the small girl.

“How is the soup?” Dominic asked, his voice softening slightly.

Maya looked up at him, her mouth full of noodles. She swallowed, wiped her chin with the back of her hand, and offered him a brilliant, wide smile.

“It’s really good,” she said. “Better than the turkey.”

Dominic looked at the small pink rabbit lunchbox sitting on the counter beside her. He reached out, picked up the pink plastic container, and opened it. Inside lay a single, slightly crushed piece of white bread.

“You saved this for him too?” Dominic asked.

Maya nodded proudly. “For tomorrow morning. So he doesn’t get sad when the sun comes up.”

Dominic looked at Elena. “Your daughter saved the life of a dog that served my father for ten years. In this house, we don't forget debts.”

Dominic pulled a silver pen from his jacket and wrote a short note on a notepad sitting near the phone.

“Starting today, Elena,” Dominic said, “you are no longer a cleaning maid. You are the manager of the estate’s domestic staff. Your salary is tripled. Your daughter will have a private room in the main house, and she will go to the private academy in town starting Monday.”

Elena’s eyes went wide. She pressed her hands to her mouth, tears instantly spilling over her cheeks. “Mr. Moretti... I... I don't know what to say—"

“You don't need to say anything,” Dominic said, gently closing the pink lunchbox and setting it down. “Just make sure she always has fresh turkey in her lunchbox.”

Dominic turned toward the main hallway.

“Marco,” Dominic called out as his lieutenant entered the kitchen.

“Boss?”

“Where is my brother?”

“He’s in the library, Boss. He just came back from a lunch meeting in the city with Julian Bellandi.”

Dominic’s jaw tightened. “Gather four men. Block the driveway. No one leaves this house.”
