Chapter 7 - THE RECKONING IN OYSTER BAY

The silence that exploded inside the library was absolute, suffocating, and profound.
Anthony Russo froze, his jaw dropping open in sheer, unadulterated terror.
Vanessa stumbled back three steps, her face draining of all color until she looked like a ghost in her emerald dress.
Dr. Calvin Hale dropped his amber glass vial. It smashed against the hardwood floor, spilling the clear liquid poison across the rug.
“You... you...” Vanessa gasped, her voice trembling violently. “You can hear...?”
Dominic stood up slowly from behind his desk. He towered over the men in the room, his six-foot-two frame radiating a terrifying, lethal authority that had been dormant for three long years.
“I heard every word, Vanessa,” Dominic said smoothly, his gray eyes locking onto hers. “I heard you call me a broken shell on the terrace last night. I heard your father brag about the car bomb that killed my brother. And I heard Dr. Hale discuss my lethal dose three seconds ago.”
“Kill him!” Henri Corneille roared, his voice cracking with panic as he gestured wildly to his six security operatives. “Kill him now!”
The six armed operatives reached into their suits for their weapons.
They were two seconds too late.
Grant Bell moved with terrifying, military precision. He raised a heavy tactical control unit from his belt and pressed a red button.
THUD! THUD! THUD!
Heavy steel security shutters slammed down over every window and door in the library, sealing the room into an impenetrable, soundproof steel vault.
At the same time, four panel doors behind the bookshelves slid open, revealing eight of Dominic’s personal, loyal tactical guards—men who had served Ethan and Dominic for a decade—holding silenced submachine guns aimed directly at Corneille’s operatives.
“Drop your weapons!” Grant ordered, his voice echoing like thunder.
Corneille’s men looked at the submachine guns, looked at the steel-reinforced room, and slowly lowered their weapons to the floor, raising their hands in surrender.
Anthony Russo fell to his knees, clutching his chest, his eyes wide with frantic, pathetic panic. “Dominic! Please! It was Corneille! He forced me into this! I loved Ethan like a son!”
Dominic stepped around his massive desk. He didn't look at Russo. He walked up to Dr. Calvin Hale.
The old doctor was shaking violently, his knees knocking together, tears of fear leaking from his old eyes. “Dominic... please... I’m your family doctor... I treated your father...”
Dominic reached out, grabbed Hale by his expensive silk lapels, and dragged him toward the shattered glass vial on the floor.
“You swore an oath to heal people, Calvin,” Dominic whispered in his ear, his voice dropping into a terrifying register. “And for three years, you sold my silence for seventy-five thousand dollars a month.”
Dominic released the doctor, letting him drop onto the floor beside the spilled toxin.
Then Dominic turned to Henri Corneille.
The French-Canadian billionaire was standing stiffly, trying to maintain his arrogant composure, though a bead of cold sweat was trickling down his temple.
“You think you’ve won, Mercer?” Corneille spat. “My corporation has lawyers, politicians, and judges in three countries. You can't touch me.”
Dominic smiled—a cold, terrifying sight that sent a shiver through everyone in the room.
He reached onto his desk and turned on a large flat-screen monitor mounted on the library wall.
On the screen was a live feed of a federal court building in Manhattan.
A senior Assistant United States Attorney was standing before a crowd of news reporters, flanked by armed Federal Marshals:
“...At three o'clock this afternoon, federal agents executed arrest warrants for executive members of Corneille Infrastructure Corporation and the Russo family, following a massive wiretap investigation supported by physical financial records and chemical evidence provided by Dominic Mercer...”
Corneille’s face went completely grey.
“Every conversation in this house for the last fourteen days has been recorded on high-definition audio, Henri,” Dominic said calmly. “Your confession about Ethan’s murder was broadcast directly to a federal grand jury twenty minutes ago.”
The heavy steel door of the library hissed open.
Six Federal Marshals, backed by New York State Troopers, poured into the room with drawn weapons.
“Henri Corneille! Anthony Russo! Calvin Hale! Vanessa Russo!” the lead Marshal announced, his voice booming through the library. “You are under arrest for federal conspiracy, RICO violations, and first-degree murder!”

As the Marshals handcuffed Vanessa, she turned to Dominic, her eyes filled with desperate, weeping tears. “Dominic! Please! I was forced into this! Forgive me!”
Dominic looked at her with cold, unyielding indifference. He did not speak a single word. He turned his back on her, watching silently as the Marshals dragged the entire conspiracy out of his house in chains.
