Chapter 8 - The Decryption

Frank pulled a sterile medical kit from a cabinet near the kitchen counter.

He brought out a small, disposable lancet—the kind used by diabetics to test blood sugar levels—and a clear glass micro-capillary tube.

I sat back down on the leather armchair, holding Logan’s left hand gently in mine. I squeezed his tiny middle finger, rubbing the soft tip until it was warm.

“Just a small prick, baby,” I whispered into his hair as he stirred, his eyes fluttering open sleepily in the dim room. “Mommy’s right here.”

“Mommy?” Logan muttered, rubbing his eyes with his small fist. “Are we home?”

“Not yet, sweetie,” I whispered, kissing his forehead. “Just stay still for one second.”

Frank pressed the lancet against the tip of Logan’s finger.

CLICK.

Logan flinched slightly, letting out a small, soft “Ow!” before I pulled his hand against my chest, kissing his tiny crown while Frank touched the tip of the glass tube to a single, bright bead of dark red blood.

“All done, big guy,” Frank said warmly, applying a small yellow Band-Aid featuring a cartoon racecar around Logan’s finger. “You were very brave.”

Frank walked over to the side table, where the silver-and-black satellite terminal was hooked up to a high-powered forensic scanner.

He placed the platinum wedding band into a custom circular recess on the scanner platform. Then, using a sterile dropper, he transferred the single drop of Logan’s blood onto a small optical sensor positioned right beside the metal band.

Alessandro stepped up to the console. He pressed his heavy right thumb against the primary biometric glass plate.

BEEP.

The terminal screen instantly burst into activity. Lines of green binary code began scrolling rapidly down the black display, accompanied by the high-pitched, rhythmic whir of cooling fans accelerating inside the box.

BIOMETRIC MATCH 1: ROMANO, ALESSANDRO (ACCEPTED)

ANALYZING DNA SAMPLE...

GENETIC SEQUENCE IDENTIFIED: WINTERS, LOGAN (DIRECT HEIR MATCH: WINTERS, DAVID - 99.98% ACCURACY)

DECRYPTION KEY ENGAGED.

UNLOCKING VANGUARD GLOBAL LEDGER v4.1...

The screen froze for two agonizing seconds.

Then, a high-resolution map of the United States expanded across the monitor, covered in thousands of glowing blue, red, and yellow nodes.

“My God,” Frank breathed, his eyes wide as he scanned the directory titles appearing on the left side of the screen. “It’s everything. Financial accounts, shell company registration numbers, safehouse coordinates, corrupt official registries...”

“Look at the active tracking node,” Alessandro commanded, pointing his cane at a single blinking red icon located in West Baltimore.

I stood up, holding Logan, and leaned over the console to look at the screen.

The red icon was located at an industrial parcel near the Patapsco River—a massive, abandoned grain storage facility known as the CSX Port Terminal.

Beside the blinking red icon was a live, automated telemetry status line generated by David’s encrypted field beacon:

ASSET: WINTERS, D. (CRITICAL)

STATUS: CONTAINED / ACTIVE BIOMETRIC SIGNAL

LOCATION: CSX TOWER - LEVEL 4

HOSTILE FORCE COUNT: 14 UNITS (VANGUARD SEC)

My blood ran cold.

“He’s alive,” I whispered, my hand flying to my mouth. “He’s alive... but they have him pinned down in that tower!”

“They don't just have him pinned down,” Alessandro said, his eyes scanning the secondary tactical readout on the monitor. “Vanguard has deployed a specialized extraction team. They aren't trying to kill him yet. They’re trying to force him to give up the location of the ring.”

He turned around, his cane snapping against the hardwood floor with a sharp, decisive crack.

“Frank!” Alessandro shouted, his voice echoing through the high rafters of the lodge. “Mobilize Teams Alpha and Bravo! Get the armored suburbans loaded! We leave for the CSX Terminal in five minutes!”

“Alessandro,” Frank hesitated, looking at the mob boss’s bandage-wrapped chest. “You’ve got two torn stitches and a punctured lung that was drained four hours ago! You can’t go into an assault!”

Alessandro reached into his coat pocket, pulled out a silver syringe containing a concentrated dose of tactical adrenaline, and jammed it directly through his shirt into his thigh without hesitation.

He depressed the plunger, threw the empty plastic barrel onto the floor, and straightened his posture as his pupils dilated into two midnight-black points.

“I am not dying in a bed while David Winters fights alone,” Alessandro growled, pulling his captured submachine gun off the table. “And Vanguard is going to burn today.”

He looked at me.

“Catherine. You and the boy stay here with the rear guard—”

“No,” I interrupted, stepping forward, my voice leaving no room for debate.

Alessandro frowned. “Catherine, it’s a warzone—”

“My husband is in that tower!” I said, my eyes blazing with an unholy fury that matched his own. “I spent two years believing he was dead! I am not sitting in a log cabin waiting for a phone call! I am coming with you!”

May you like

Alessandro stared at me for three long seconds. A slow, dark grin spread across his scarred face—a look of pure, predatory respect.

“Frank,” Alessandro ordered quietly. “Get Mrs. Winters a tactical vest and a loaded sidearm.”
