Chapter 9 - THE CONFRONTATION

Arthur Ashworth signed every document.
Stripped of his power, his allies, and his reputation, the old man collapsed into his chair, a broken shadow of the tyrant he had once been. Marcus Whitlock was dragged away by federal agents waiting outside—agents who had been anonymously provided with Elena’s journal and ten years of Marcus’s illegal financial bribery records.
By nightfall, the Ashworth empire had completely dissolved.
Dante returned to his mountain estate as a light rain began to fall.
He walked up the grand staircase to the third floor, pushing open the heavy doors of the master suite.
Elena was sitting by the fireplace, wearing a soft white dress, holding a cup of hot tea. When she saw Dante step into the room, her breath caught.
He looked tired, his dark hair damp from the rain, but his eyes were completely clear—devoid of the icy darkness that usually haunted him.
“Is it over?” Elena asked softly, setting her tea down.
Dante walked over to her, taking off his overcoat and tossing it onto a chair. He knelt on the thick carpet beside her seat, looking up into her face.
“Arthur and Vivienne are leaving the country tonight,” Dante told her gently. “Marcus Whitlock is in federal custody facing twenty years in prison. They will never touch you again, Elena. They will never even hear your name.”
Elena sat in silence for a long moment, processing the words. The heavy, invisible chains that had wrapped around her heart for twenty-four years suddenly snapped, evaporating into the warm air of the room.
Tears spilled over her lashes—not tears of fear or pain, but of pure, overwhelming relief.
“Thank you,” she whispered, her voice cracking. “Thank you, Dante...”
Dante reached up, his large, warm thumb gently wiping the tears from her cheeks.
“You don't have to thank me,” he said softly. “You gave me a reason to be something better than a monster.”
He reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out the small leather folder he had given her weeks ago—the one containing her new identification papers, her clean bank account, and the deed to the house in Vermont.
He set it on her lap.
“You are completely free now, Elena,” Dante said, his voice carrying a subtle, heartbreaking weight. “The house in Vermont is ready. My drivers can take you there tomorrow morning. You can raise your baby in peace, far away from this world.”
Elena looked down at the leather folder, then looked back at Dante.
“Is that what you want?” she asked quietly. “For me to leave?”
Dante looked away, his jaw tightening as he fought back the deep, consuming emotion rising in his chest.
“I am a mafia boss, Elena,” Dante whispered. “My world is violent, loud, and dangerous. You deserve a quiet life with sunlight and gardens. You deserve safety.”
Elena slowly reached out, grabbing the leather folder, and tossed it into the roaring fire.
The leather caught flame instantly, curling and burning into black ash.
Dante’s eyes widened in shock. “Elena... what are you doing?”
Elena leaned forward, placing both of her soft hands against Dante’s face, forcing him to look directly into her eyes.
“I felt safer in this house with you,” Elena declared softly, “than I ever felt anywhere else in my life. I don't want a quiet house in Vermont alone, Dante. I want to stay here. With you.”
Dante stared at her, his breath catching in his throat. “Elena... I have scars on my soul.”
May you like
“And I have scars on my back,” she replied gently, a soft, beautiful smile lighting up her face. “We can heal them together.”
Dante couldn't hold back any longer. He reached up, cupping the back of her head, and pulled her down into a deep, passionate kiss that shattered every remaining wall between them.
